Heads of Events on the Coast of Coromandel from the attack of Vandewash, Oct. 1752, until the arrival of Mortizally at Pondicherry, March 1753, together with a List of Officers killed and wounded on the Coast. This Scrap by Capt. Clive in 1753. This list is not very clear either as to the time which it covers or the date when it was compiled, but it seems to show that out of a total of 35 officers, 15 had been killed, 2 made prisoners, and 11 wounded.

Below.
27, p. 662. Letter, dated Fort St. David, 15 Feb. 1765 from John Carey to Clive. Copy. Reports the capture of Sergeant Lemon at "Chomundilum."
28, pp. 662-663. A very remarkable letter from Clive to Lawrence advising him what to do in order to frustrate the intentions of the French, who seemed to design crossing the Coleroon in order to attack Clive and his body at Pitchandah. May 1752. Copy. Orme states in the Index to this volume that this letter is without date of time or place, but "must have been wrote in May. 1752," This is a mistake as will be seen by reference to Lawrence's letter of the 20th April 1752 (see above, II. 35 (12), (p. 463), which is a reply to it. The following parallel passages are decisive.
Clive. "The following I take to be the enemy's design, the moment the river is unpassable to pass over with their whole force. Should this be the case I doubt much whether we shall be strong enough to defend ourselves against the enemy and their battering cannon. This party runs a risqué of suffering greatly as you will not be able to come to our assistance. Certainly the major part of the grand army ought to be on our side."
Lawrence (20 April 1752). "You now say that whether your party is sufficient to oppose the enemy should they attempt to pass your way when the river is up is much to be doubted as you then can expect no timely assistance from me, and that the greatest part of the forces should be on your side."
From Lawrence's letter, taken as a whole, it appears that Clive was consulted in the matter of the despatch of part of the army across the Coleroon, but hardly, as Orme states (History, 1. 244), that he suggested the move.
29, pp.663-664. Letters from Captain Dalton to Clive. Copy. (1) Letter, dated Camp near Wootatoor, 8, at night [3 May 1752], advising that he has just drove M. d'Auteuil's party into the Fort of Wootatoor. (2) Letter, dated Wootatoor Fort, 4 May, 9 o'clock. Reports the capture of Utatur and the retreat of d'Auteuil to Volkonda, In this letter Dalton says: "I give you joy my dear friend on the success of your scheme, which I think must be utter ruin to the enemy's army—as everybody almost disapproved of it you have all the honour of it." The scheme apparently was to send a separate force under Dalton to attack the relieving force under d'Auteuil, whilstClive, by holding fast at Samayaveram, misled the enemy into thinking that he intended no immediate action. In this letter Dalton mentions the deserter Captain Murray, and also the gallant behaviour of Muhammad Yusuf, the Nellore Subadar.
30, p. 665, An idea of the battle at the Sugar Loaf Rock, fought 23 Sept. 1753, taken from a sketch of Colonel Calliaud's, drawn by himself for me, R. O., with a pencil. Copy.
31, pp. 666--667, Fragment of a letter, undated, from Captain Dalton to Captain Clive, describing the action at the Choultry on Seringham in which the English party were cut to pieces, 24 December 1752. Copy. The description is more detailed than that given in Dalton's Narrative on pages 566-568 of this volume. Some writers assert that the defeat of the English was due chiefly to the gallantry of the Mysore horse under Haidar Ali, but Dalton here says that the Mysore people never came near, and that the battle was decided by Hari Singh and the Marathas. Orme says that the part played by the Mysoreans was the massacre of the fugitives (History. 1. 271). 32, pp. 667 -671. Affairs at Palarncotah from December 1753 to May 1754, written by Major Richard, Smith for R, O. in 1763, Copy. The Palamcottuh referred to lies north of the Coleroon and a little to the north of west of Devikottai. The account is confused but of some interest, as it refers to matters which Orme almost wholly omits.
33, pp. 671-672. Account of the action when Major Lawrence marched to Tritchanopoly, 16 August 1754. Written by Major Richard Smith for R.O. in 1763. Orders the 16th Aug. 1754. Copy. On p.672 there is a kind of postscript explaining the behaviour of the Tanjoreans who formed the rearguard. This action was one of those fought by Lawrence to relieve Trichinopoly (see Orme, History, I., p.369).
