This is the answer which Drake laid before the Council and the only one made public. It was supposed that Drake had really made a different reply which had incensed the Nawab.

12 (1), pp. 875-877. Account of the Revenues of Bengall, Bahar and Orissa, taken in the year 1158, under the Soubaship of Jaffer Ally Cawn, Mahabut Jung. Copy. The orginal of this was inserted in 41 (pp. 51-56), but has been taken out, and is probably the same as 280. 1. In the Index of that volume it is said to have been prepared by Luke Scrafton from the Minister's Books. Apparently sent home by Clive with his letter, dated Calcutta, 30 Dec. 1758:- "Enclosed I send you an exact state of the revenues of Bengal, Bahar and Orissa: this is not an account of hearsay, but an account taken verbatim from the books of the prime minister Roy Dulup, who now resides at Calcutta under the English protection." (2) pp. 878-883. Particulars of the Revenues arising from the lands, containing only what each country pays for the Colsah, being the King's rent, and the Jaghire, which is the rent due on the Nabob's lands. Copy.

Orme says that he does not know the author, who signs himself M. S. (? Mr. Scrafton, see J. 13 and 14 below). A savage attack upon John Zephaniah Holwell, who officiated as Governor until the arrival of Vansittart. For enclosures see No. 19 below.
