3, pp. 1650-1672. Journal of the Proceedings of the Expedition to Bengal under Admiral Watson, cornmanding his Majesty's fleet, and Colonel Clive the land forces, from the 17th Oct. 1756 to the 5th of July 1757. Copy. Internal evidence shows that this is the journal of Sir (then Captain) Eyre Coote. It has been printed in Hill's Bengal in 1756-57, Vol. III.. p. 39. N.B. In the Genuine Minutes of the Select Committee, published by T. Evans, 1772, there is in a note (see pp. 38-40) what purports to be a verbatim extract from Coote's journal, describing the battle of Plassey, which he read to the Select Committee. In this it is definitely stated that Clive went to sleep during the battle. This statement is not to be found in Orme's copy of the Journal (see p. 1667). Like Coote's other Journals this Journal contains copies in full of a number of letters and papers, viz. :- (1) Two letters from Admiral Watson, 2 Jan. 1757, p. 1652. (2) Translation of the Treaty of Peace and Agreement with the Nabob Sirajah Dowlat, p. 1656. Contains (p. 1674) the letter from Alexander de Saussure to Jean Law, which caused de Saussure's conviction and execution as aspy, the Proceedings of a Council of War held at Bankipur, 30 July 1757 (p. 1683), an Account of the annual produce of the Saltpetre Aurungs (p. 1686), and the Proceedings of a Council of War held at Chupra, 4 Aug. 1757 (p. 1690). An account of this expedition is given in the Journal of Surgeon Edward Ives, Cap. XI.

Deposition of Thomas Ley, one of the English Council at Hughley, concerning the first hostilities committed there between the English under the command of Job Chanock, Oct. 28th 1687. This is copied out of a printed book lent to me by Mr. Alexander Hume, which book is entitled "An impartial vindication of the E.I.C. from the unjust and slanderous imputations cast upon them in a treatise entitled A justification of the Directors of the Netherlands East India Company, as it was delivered over unto the High and Mighty Lords the States General of the United Provinces. Translated out of Dutch, and feigned to be printed at London in the year 1687, but supposed to be printed at Amsterdam as well in English as in French and Dutch." London, 1688. Copy. The deposition was sworn before John Shorter, Major, on the 7th March 1687, and may be found on pp. 208-217 of the Impartial Vindication. The latter contains a number of copies of original papers.
12, pp. 1726-1733. There is in the India Office a printed volume marked, "Book VI. The War of Bengal," which differs from both. This printed volume is very interesting, as from the marginal notes it appears that only six copies were printed, and that this version was submitted to Lord Clive with a particular request that no one except Colonel Richard Smith and Mr. Edmund Maskelyne should be allowed to see it. See 222. 143 and 293. 9, 10.
