2, pp. 2982-2991. Correspondence between the Council (and Major Lawrence, Messrs. Wynch and Westcott, from Sept. 18th to Nov. 14th, 1749, at Fort St. George. Copy. Official papers connected with the restoration of Madras to the English in 1749 in accordance with the treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (18 Oct. 1748). See 15. 4. (1) Letters from Stringer Lawrence, Alexander Wynch, and Foss Westcott to Charles Floyer and Council, Fort St. David, 18 Sept. (p. 2982), 21 Sept. (p. 2983), 23 Sept. (p. 2984), 25 Sept. (p. 2985). (2) Letter from Lawrence, Wynch, and Westcott to Captain William Grierson, dated – (p. 2983). (3) Letters from Lawrence and Westcott to Floyer and Council, Fort St. David. 29 Sept. (p. 2985), 1 Oct. (two letters pp. 2986 and 2987), 4 Oct. (p. 2987), 8 Oct. (p. 2987). The last of these letters expressly states the opinion of the English that the French "are aiming at nothing less than becoming masters of the Province, having got together a large force for that purpose, and by that to exclude us from the trade thereof." If then, Dupleix had not yet formed his plan of Indian conquest, he was at this early date credited with having done so by the English. The same letter illustrates the difficulty which the Company experienced in obtaining recruits from the King's Regiments returning to Europe, the men refusing to serve under strangers, and their officers refusing to join the Company's service except with higher rank. Accordingly Lawrence asked for commissions for a certain number of officers. As Admiral Boscawen brought out with him not a British Regiment but only a number of "Independent Companies," presumably, the officers belonged to the latter. These Companies were the first King's troops in Madras. Adlercron's Regiment, the 39th, which bears the title of Primus in Indis was the first King's Regiment to land in Madras. It arrived in 1754. Bombay, however, claims priority against Madras in that King's soldiers were sent with the Earl of Marlborough (James Ley), when Bombay was ceded to the English in 1661. (4) Letter from Stringer Lawrence and Foss Westcott to Adam Dawson and Council, Fort William, 9 Oct. 1749 (p. 2989). (5) Letters from Stringer Lawrence to Floyer and Council, Fort St, David. 15 Oct.
