Explains (paragraph 1) the constitution of the courts at that time having jurisdiction over the native inhabitants; (paragraph 2) the absence of instructions, except for the Court of Sĕmarang [see 2 infra]; (paragraph 3) the non-existence of any Dutch treatise on Javanese law, (except certain abstracts, as to which see infra), recourse being had to native treatises (Mogharaer, Moghalie, and Kitap Tophaur [=Rāfirs Muḥarrar; al-Maḥalli's commentary on the Minḥāj-al-T̤alibin; and Kitāb Tuḥfah, see 8-10. &c., infra]), with occasional reference to special directions when native law was inadequate or deemed contrary to natural justice. 8, pp: 27-47 : Compendium of the principal Java, laws drawn out of the Mahometan' Lawbook Mogharaer [=Muḥarrar], and Composed as much as possible according to the 'Godly Natural and Civil right; in su'ch manner that right, and justice can be executed agreable to the same, without prejudicing the Javanese Customs and habits. Translated (with omission of articles vii, viii," and' xii) from' the Dutch of 12 ,& 30 infra. For contents see 30 infra.
9, pp. 51-74 : Compendium of the principal Civil Laws &: Customs, according to which the Javanees and other Mahometans regulate themselves, in the deciding of disputes arising amongst them, so with regard to successions, heritages and estates, item their Marriages and Divorces. Collected out of the Mahometan law books Mogharner [=Muḥarrer] and Moghalie [=Maḥalli's commentary on the Minḥāj-al-T̤alibin], according to the accounts of the Priests and Native Chiefs. Articles 1-67-Succession; 68-106-Marriage and Divorce ; finally 7 articles, separately numbered, on Adultery. Translated from the Dutch. It is the same work as 17 infra, which, however, lacks the first 4 and last 7 articles. The latter are from 30 infra.
10, pp. 75-142 : Translation of an Extract from the Kitab Toogvah [=Ar. Tuḥfah, av. Tuhpah]; concerning punishments to be inflictied for vaious crimes and Misdemeanours, which said Bookwas compiled from Alcordan by Toewan Cheik I Benoe Hadjar [=Tuan Shaikh Ibnu Hajar] in the year Ninehundred and fifty eight after the Arabian Chronology or Aera [=A.D. 1544].160articles. Headed Capital Punishment, but this only applies to the first few articles. Articles 1-25 comprises Murder and Manslaughter. Articles 26-74 are headed The Punishments assigned to Cutting, Stabbing, Wounding and Beating, and include various cases 5 of bodily hurt, whether resulting in death or otherwise; article 73 contains directions to the judge in cases where a charge of murder is brought; article 74, the procedure to be followed when a dead body is found in a small village, whose inhabitants formerly lived in enmity with the deceased. Articles 75 seqq. are headed Punishment for High Treason, Profonation of the Graves [sic], Theft and other lesser crimes, but include provisions of the most miscellaneous kind, both of criminal and what we should call civil law. Thus article 89 (pp. 110-12) deals at length with the number and kind of withesses essential in different kinds of cases; article 93 provides that in case of conflict of evidence possession shall constitute a good title to goods; articles 100 seqq. deal with damage done by animals; articles 113 seqq. with buying and selling; articles 155 seqq. with lending and pawning; articles 150 seqq. With estates of deceased debtors and insolvents, &c., &c. The cases dealt with are usually quite specific, e.g., article 106, A man holding a Cow or Buffaloe tied by a Rope and the Animal getting loose, damages the garden or property of an other, he is not bound to make indemnification." Presumably translated from the Dutch. At the end appear in the same hand the words “ (A True Copy) J. Eckford, ' Asst Secretary to Govt ". 11, pp. 143-66 : Compendium of the old Javanees Laws, which were used before the Coming of Sjech Amoelahna [=Shaikh Maulana] at Java abstracted out of the Gongaloengang Boedo Tjeneenang or Holtius [?] lekewise named Negoro Krommo [=Nĕgara Krama]. 69 articles, of a miscellaneous description. Article 1 deals with the manner of taking oaths, 2 gives the scale of penalties applicable to different ranks, from a subordinate regent (40 dollars or 48,000 kippings= Mal. kĕping) to a slave (2 amas), 3-6-insults and assaults, 7-11-theft, 12-20-murder and manslaughter, 21-6 -adultery, 27-9-divorce, 30-wrongful suits, 31-4-dealing in stolen goods, &c., 35-marriage of a free woman with a slave, 36-recovery of stolen cattle, and so forth. Article 68 provides that two women are to be deemed equal to one man, in giving evidence; article 69 provides for the share to be given to the local chief when a buffalo is slaughtered. Translated (presumably from the Dutch).
12, pp. 183-220 : Compendium der Voornaamste Javasche, Wetten, &c. MS. copy of 30 infra, q.v., for the full title and contents of the first part (top. 208). For the rest of the contents (pp. 208-20) see 2-7 supra. A pencilled heading on p. 181 styles it "Compendium of The Javanese Law in Dutch. Copied at Surabaya from a MS in the possession of & signed by Mr. [?, name indecipherable]-April 1812." Ends with the instructions to the Jaksas (=7 supra). The Dutch original of 2~8 supra, though the order is different.

Recites the presentation of a petition to Governor-General hristoffel van Zwoll [=Swoll] and the members of the Council of Netherlands India by the Chinese headmen and others regarding their marriage laws and the confusion prevailing in connexion therewith.

Letter in Dutch from R. de Klerk [Extraordinary member of Council] to Governor-General Jacob Mossel and the members of the Council of Netherlands India on Chinese law. After an introductory notice of the chief subject matters of Chinese law, pp. 272-95 contain 57 articles, drawn up and signed by P[ieter] Hacksteen, headed Chinas Recht, with marginal observations on many of the articles, dealing with Chinese family law, inhedtance succession, adoption, &c' , The following are the sub-headings :-Over Article 1-Mannen en vrouwen en derzelver onderscheid; 5-Maagschap wettig of onwettig Gebooren; 8-Meerdel jarige. en mander jarige mondige en onmondige ; 11-Magt der ouderen over de kinderen ; 15-Huwelijken ; 24-overspel ; 25-Egtscheijding ; 26-Voogdij en Voogden ; 34-Boedel Recht en Erff'enis; 36-Uiterste Wille & hoe deselve bestaan ; 41-Erflating en Wie men mag en moet tot Erfgenaam stellen ; 45-Legaten ; 46-Versterfs Regt en deszelfs verdeeling ; 51-Adoptie. On the case of Ni Poet-nia (or Ni Foetnio), a Chinese widow who turned Muhammadan and designed to marry her daughter to a Muhammadan. No order on the petition that she should be deprived of property inherited from her parents or prevented from carrying out her design; but for the future revives the proclamation (placaat) of 9 February 1717, forbidding Ohi~ese and Muhammadans from marrying out of their respective " nations " (natie).
