1, pp. 36-7: Paccalongang [=Pĕkalongan], 27 April 1812. Statistic Table of the Population, Cattle & Produce in the District of Paccalongang [=Pĕkalongan]. By F. E. Hardy, Landdrost, Pĕkalongan. Copy. Includes numbers of the population, classified by race, class, sex, and age, numbers of buffaloes, cattle, and horses, classified by sex, and distributed under their owners as classified by race, and the amount of produce, such as rice, coconuts, oil, cotton, sugar, indigo, pepper, tobacco, and maize, and also the number of coffee trees, similarly distributed.
2, pp. 39-50: Paccalongang [= Pekalongan], 1812. Extract of Answer to the points of enquiry proposed by the Committee. Copy. By the author of 1 supra. The paper deals chiefly with :-(a) pp. 39-44 : The distribution and emoluments of natives assigned for services among the chiefs and under the following special subheads, viz.: Coffee Cultivation, Forests, Storehouses, Vessels, Post-establishment & Tavern, Djayang Sekars [=jayeng sĕkar, native constabulary], Oppassers, Corps of reserve, Gladdaks [=glaḍag, a special service of men and horses, cf. Gericke & Roorda, Javaansch Nederlandsch Handoordenboek, s.v.], the Regent, the Bepatties, Mantries, and farther Chiefs; (b) pp. 44-50: Taxation, classification of lands, particulars relating to rice cultivation and the division of the produce, fruit-trees, forests, waste lands, &c. The questions, to which these are replies, are the same as in 8 (a) infra. See 35. 4 infra.

The chief subjects discussed are :-pp. 55-7 : The Government establishment, the fort, and the subdivisions of the territory ; pp; 57-60: Regency of Paccalongang [=Pekalongan], origin of the Regent's family, history of the district character and family of the Regent ; pp. 60-2 : Regency of Batang, description of the country, descent, character and family of the Regent ; pp. 62-3 : Regency of Wieradessa [=Wiradesa], its history, descent, character and family of the Regent ; pp. 63-4: Territory of Oeloedjamie [=Ulujami], its history, independent position of the Chinaman who held it in farm ; pp. 64-72: Extent of rice cultivation in these four districts, discussion as to the meaning and origin of the words tjatja [=chachah, (in this context) a cstomary land meaure, its variable amount and history, the jonk [=jung, another land measure], (in this context) a customary land measure], its variable amount and history, the jonk [=:jung, another land measure], and other local units of measurement, &c. ; pp. 72-7 : Villages, hamlets, population, emigration, waste lands, causes of a decrease in population, smallpox, the opium habit, Asiatic aliens; pp. 77-93 : Contingents, imposts and taxes, produce deliverable in kind (rice, cotton yarn, indigo, timber), forests, pepper, coffee, &c., services imposed on the Regents (in men, ships, and horses, &c.) ; pp. 94-105 : Assignment of rice fields to different ranks and grades, other revenues of the Regents, and their outgoings payable to the Company, with detailed figures for each Regency (not including Ulujami, which was on a different footing). Doubtless translated from the Dutch. A short account of the life of the a.uthor (who was by birth a German named Rothenbtihler) is given by E. Ketjen in Verhandelingen v. h. Bataviaasch Genootschap v. Kunsten en Wetenschappen (1881), Deel XLI, 3e af1., pp. 71-3.
4, pp. 111-14 : Descriptive Memoir on the" Landdrostcy of Japara & Joana" [=Juwana], byH. Hope, Commissioner. Copy. This includes the four Districts or Regencies of Japara, Koodus. [=Kudus], Patty [=Pati], and Joana. [=Juwana]. The paper deals with the contingents payable to Government, coffee cultivation, population, productions, forests, characteristics of the several districts, canal, river, and town of Juwand, labour, native constabulary (jayeng sĕkar), and post establishment, &c. According to the table of Contents this memoir was written in 1811.
5, pp. 115-22 : Japara, 1 October 1811. Memoir respecting the present State of the District of Japara, by Mr Van Haak, Acting Landdrost, Copy. The marginal and other sub-headings are as follows: Division [i.e., into 4 districts as in 4 supra], Extent, Regents, Population [figures identical with those of 4 supra], Taxes & Contributions [as in 4 supra], Teak Forests & Coffee Cultivation, Police [including judicature], Japara Establishment (including Civil Service and Pensioners at Japara and Joana [=Juwana], and Post Establishment), Yearly Revenues & Expences, of the Japara District, Statistic Account of the Population, Cattle & Produce of the Districts of Japara & Joanna [=Juwana], and Annual Contingencies in Kind (Rice and Coffee & Pepper delivered in 1810). According to the Table of Contents this memoir was addressed by its author to the author of 4 supra.
6, pp. 127-80 : Japara, 28 October 1812. Replies to the points of Enquiry Proposed by His Excellency Thomas Stamford Raffles, Esqre. Lieutenant-Governor of Java thc. &c. &c. to the Resident of Japara by Mr [J. H.] Doornick, Resident. The chief subjects dealt with are : pp. 127-32: Recent administrative changes in the territory, legendary history and traditional etymologies of Japara, Codus [=Kudus], Patty [=Paṭi] and Joana [=Juwana] ; pp. 132-7: Situation and extent, boundaries, soil, produce, paddy [=rice] cultivation, the agricultural calendar, process of cultivation; pp. 138-51 : Rivers (with other topographical details), islands, anchorage, coast, tides, lake, mountains, limestone and lime-burning ; pp. 151-2 : Further particulars as to cultivation of various produets (rice, coff'ee, indigo, &c., &c.), seasons ; pp. 153-8 : Character of the natives, Javanese, Malay, Chinese (the latter are accused of being usurers, receivers of stolen goods, &c., and generally the author's estimate of the native population is unfavourable and unsympathetic), births, marriages, and deaths; polygamy exceptional, non-Muhammadan Javanese; pp. 158-65: Javanese marriage ceremonies [the author quotes the marriage formula used, in Batavian Malay, giving an English translation: it includes a clause providing for divorce (without any form of process) at the wife's instance in the following circumstances: "If you should happen to be absent from her for the space of Seven Months on Shore, or one year at Sea without giving her any subsistence, and are remiss in the performance of the Duties, which you owe to your Sovereign" (“ Trada angkat Pakerdjahan Radja ")], ceremonial observances during pregnancy, at delivery, and in childhood, funeral ceremonies, commemorative festivals for the dead ; pp. 165-7 : Domestic and wild animals ; p. 168-73 : Administration of Justice, recent changes therein, law (native and Dutch) [the author forwards 5 treatises on Javanese law in Malay which are not in this volume] ; pp. 173-80 : land tenure and administration, rights and liabilities of the Regents, suggested changes in the system, money contributions payable by the Regents, Daendels' reforms, assignment of rice ' lands to various ranks and grades, land and paddy measures, non-hereditary character of the office of Regent, rights of property of the cultivators. Van der Werff: Arranged nearly in the same way as 1 supra, though not entering quite so far into detail as regards the classes of the population and varying slightly in the produce enumerated. The items here given include rice, coconuts, coffee, cotton, sugar, indigo, pepper, tobacco, maize, jarak or lamp-oil nuts, kachang, &c. (b) pp. 223-90: Rĕmbang, 9 July 1812. Statistic Report on the District of Rembang in answer to the Queries of December 1811. Translated from the original Dutch Memoir of Mr. Van der Werff, Resident, 9 July 1812. With an appendix. Copy. p. 294: List of the 12 (really 13) Appendices. (a) pp. 297-332 : Points of Enquiry Concerning the District of Rembang with Replies to the same by P. H. van Lawick van Pabst Resident 30th November 1812. The questions asked are set out in the margin. They are grouped under the following heads: A 16 arts., B 31 arts., C 9 arts., D 7 arts., E 11 arts., F 6 arts., G 8 arts., and H 5 arts., and are too long to be quoted in extenso (cf. 30. 4 infra). The chief subjects dealt with are: pp. 297-311: Rĕmbang. And Lassum [=Lasĕm], extent and boundaries, Regents, subdivisions, population, its distribution among the chiefs and services and tenures, powers of the chiefs, assignment of lands, the land and labour system generally, with particular reference to rice-cultivators, fishermen, woodcutters, provision of buffaloes for drawing timber, &c.; pp. 311-15 : Various taxes and contributions, exemptions; pp. 316-25 : Temporary exemptions for new settlers, rights in fruit-trees, position of handicraftsmen, appointment of chiefs, emoluments of priests, land taxes payable to chiefs, poorness of soil, poverty of the inhabitants, taxes on maize-cultivation ; pp. 325-32 : Decay of trade, Chinese traders, no taxes on traders except capitation tax, aliens such as Malays should be classed with Javanese, the soil of the district unsuited for coffee cultivation, services and contingents of produce imposed on the Regencies, barrenness of soil, advisability of cutting irrigation channels. The following are Appendices to the above:- (b) pp. 333-6 : Appendix No. 1. Population of the Regentship Rĕmbang under Ultimo November 1812. In two divisions, viz.: Rembang and Lassum [=Lasĕm], with minor administrative sub-divisions, distributing the population by sex, age, ranks, classes, nationalities, and occupations. (c) pp. 337-54 : Appendix No. 2. Statement speoifying the number of Cattle, Cocoanut-trees and rice-fields; the partition of the latter, and all what has a relation; thereto; as also the labours and duties for whioh the rice fields are assigned. With a description of the method of cultivation and the customs prevailing as to the shares of the crop, payment for labour, varieties of rice cultivated, &c. (d) pp. 355-6 : Appendix No. 3. List of Vessels which have been built in the Districts of Rembang and Lassum [=Lasĕm], during the years 1791, 1792, 1793, from- 1801 till, 1803, and from 1808 till ,1810, for Government and Individuals with dimensions of the various' classes of vessels. Register of Dessas [=desa, " village "] whioh were formerly hired out to divers persons together with a Statement of the Regulations Or I nstruotions to be observed pointing out likewise how far the same are still extant. An interesting explanation of the rice of this excrescence on the Javanese feudal system, viz., the habit of letting the villages over which the chiefs had service-rights to contractors, often Chinamen. (f) pp. 363-4 : Appendix No. 5. Genealogioal table of• the Regents of Lassum [=Lasĕm] and Rĕmbang, stating their, families still living. (g) pp. 365-8 : Appendix No. 6. Memorandum of Merchandize Imported and Exported in the District at Rĕmbang during this present year (1812) with their Price. (h) pp. 369-71 : Appendix No. 7. Statement of the revenue proceeding from the farms for the Month of September 1812. Farms mean (as usually in the Far East) farms of taxes, not of lands, and here includes a poll-tax on Chinese export duty on rice, import duty on opium, &c. An explanatory note relating mainly to shipping is appended. (i) p. 372: Appendix No. 7*. Fixed Taxes at Rĕmbang. Including percentages on the purchase and sale of lands, &c. (j) pp. 373-9: Appendix No. 8. Statement of the Expenditures and revenues of the Farmer of Governments Damains [lege Domains] in the District of Rembang, from the year 1791 till 1793 inclusive.
