Some of the footnotes of the Dutch original are omitted in the translation, and a few new ones have been added. Another copy is 68. 1 infra. A volume of Mack. Misc. has another version of the middle section, containing some of the footnotes omitted here. See also Mack. General Collection, XXVI.2 and LXXIl. 5, 8. (pp. 70-2 were left blank for a paper on the Usages of the Hill People by Mr Knops, which was never filled in.)
2, pp. 73-79 : Report Concerning the Customs & Usages of the Inhabitants of the Hill of Brama & of that neighbourhood on the Island of Java. From a Letter of Mr Adriaan van Ryck Commandant of Passatrouang [=Pasuruan] to the deceased Mr Hooyman, written on the 26th of May 1787. Translated from the [7th] Volume of the Batavian Society's Researches, P. Translated from the Dutch of Verhand. v. h. Bat. Genoots. d. Kunsten en Wetenschappen (1814), 7e Deel, 11, pp. 1-8, omitting an unimportant footnote. 36, i5 infra is another copy.
3, pp. 81-211: Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 22 .Saban A. Jav. 1739, 30 August 1812. An English Translation (from the Dutch) of the Historie of the Boedists [=Buddhists]. Extracted from an Old Manuscript of Adjie Soko [=Aji Saka =Śaka], the first discoverer of the Island of Java. Treating of the Fate of Waloe [lege Watoe =Watu] Goenoong [=Gunung], of his two Wives and twenty seven Sons and also of the Calander, of the Moonsoons and the Prognostications about the adventures of Men, founded upon this Historie. Translated from the Javaneese into Dutch by Johannes Gabriel Vincent at Samarang [=Sĕmarang] in 1812-for Lieutenant Colonel Mackenzie-and rendered into English by the Revd Mr Wedding at Batavia in 1813. A note at the end states that the Javanese original was compiled by the Kiai Adipattie, Soero Adimengollo [=Kyahi Adipati Sura Adimanggala], former Resident [lege Regent] at Damak [=Dĕmak], son of the deceased Kiai Adipattie Pangerang [=Pangeran] Soero Adimengollo, former Head Regent of Samarang [=Sĕmarang]. The two translators have added footnotes. Apart from the legend of Watu Gunung, which is the mythical basis of the whole thing (pp. 82-3), this is really an elaborate exposition of the Javanese Calendar with its astrological indications from the point of view of nativities; pp. 84-5, headed The Book of Watoe Goenoong [=Watu Gunung], give a list of the 30 wukus and their dewas, in the usual order; then (pp. 89-207) they follow in detail, with tables of the " Boedist " (i.e. Hindu) week, the Javanese market-week of 5 days, and the Muhammadan and European week corresponding, together with the horoscopic import of the several wukus; pp. 209-11 contain the wukus grouped in fives as an agricultural calendar, with directions as to the seasons for sowing, planting, and reaping rice. For the Dutch original see 72. IV & V infra; 72. IV is fuller in some respects than this English version, but contains nothing corresponding to pp. 209-11 here; 72. V corresponds to our pp. 90-211. Cf. Encycl. v. Ned.-Ind., s.v. Tijdrekening; Crawfurd, Hist. Ind. Arch., Vol. I, pp. 287-304, esp. 293 seqq.; and especially F. H. J. Netscher, De Voorspellingskunst uit de Woekoes van de Javanen in Tijdschr. voor Ind. Taal., Land en Volkenkunde (1857), Deel . VI, pp. 511-34 (pp. 521-34 cover the same ground as pp. 90-207 above, viz., the horoscopic import of the several wukus and appear to be derived from the same source); cf. also J. Hageman, Tafels en Overzigt van gelukkige en ongelukkige Dagen en Uren, &c., ibid .. . (1858), VII, pp. 130-40, and the references there given, to Roorda van Eijsinga's Inclie, IIIe Boek, le Deel, pp. 275-93, and Hageman's Handleiding (Batavia, Lange en Co., 1850, IIe Deel, p. 361, &c. Regarding the author of the Javanese original, see P. H. van der Kemp, Oost-Indië's Herstel in 1816, (1911), pp, 249-51, where the name is spelt "Soeria Adi Mengolo," not "Soero." I do not know which form is the right one.
4, pp . . 213-33 : Chonology of the Dynasties of China. Translated from De Guignes for Col(l) Mackenzie. From M. Deguignes, Historie Générale des Huns, des Turcs, des Mogols et des autres Tartares, Occidentaux, &c. Paris, 1756, tom. I, pt. 1, pp. 2-77.
