1, pp. 1-15 : Concept Nieuw Contract, tusschen den Sousouhoenang [=Susuhunan], Pakoebowana [=Pakubuwana], ende Compagnie. 13 arts. of a draft treaty in modification of previous treaties of 24 September 1646 and 25 February 1677, accompanied by marginal observations on some of the articles. The 13 arts. correspond roughly with the first 12 arts. of the treaty made 5 October 1705, of which this was evidently the draft. The treaty of 5 October 1705 is printed in De Jonge De Opkomst van het Nederlandsch Gezag in Oost-Indië (1875), 8e Deel, pp. 261-8, and the notes there given embody part of the marginal observations contained in the above draft.

Aparte Memorie, ofte Instructie voor den E: Govert Cnoll:, geligeert, Drossart der Bataviaase, ommelanden, en als Commissaris en opper gesaghebber van's Comp: wegen over Javas Oost Cust, althans weder gaande na Samarang [=Sĕmarang], waarna Zijn E: Zig omtrent de behandelinge van Saken, tot desen apartelijk gereserveert zal rigten. Signed by Governor-General Jan van Hoorn and the members of the Council (Ab(m) v: Riebeck, C. van Swoll, P: De Vos, A: v: Rijn, B: Phoonsen, and H: Zwaardecron), and containing instructions to Govert Cnoll as to his course of action and policy in matters connected with Cartasoera [=Kartasura], Madura, &c. An abstract of the chief contents of the document is given in De Jonge, loc. cit., pp. xcix-c. Inter alia the letter contains a curious instruction for the making of discreet enquiries as to the illegitimate children of Europeans by Javanese or other native women, with a view to considering the best means to ensure that such children should be properly cared for and brought up.

Signed: Gerrit Cnoll [=the person mentioned in 4-8 supra]. This is his diary from 15 January to 23 March 1709, and relates in the main to conferences and negotiations with the Susuhunan and other native chiefs. On the history of the period, see De Jonge, loc. cit., pp. cix-cxv. It comprised important concessions to the Dutch Company; and a corresponding reduction of the power of the native rulers. This diary ends 28 November 1733, and is concerned largely with the political negotiations with the Court of Kartasura, which culminated in the treaty of 8 November 1733 (see (j) infra). On these events see De Jonge, De Opkomst v. h. Ned. Gezag in Oost-Indie (1877), 9e Deel, pp. xxxviii-xl.
