T.] Couperus, being answers in reply to certain questions (which are not appended here but are contained in 7 and 10 infra, 7. 8 supra and 35. 4 infra, q.v.). Copy. 2, p. 57: [Chianjur, 8 December 1811]. Copy of a letter written to Mackenzie by a person named apparently J. F. Tasse enclosing 3 infra, and reeferring to a certain stone in the district of Jehanlang [=Chihölang ?] round which a legend had grown up, and the volcanoes, hot springs and salt springs in the Regency. The original (which itself appears to be a translation from the Dutch) is in a volume of Mack. Misc.: see the index thereto, s. v. Tasse.

3, pp. 59-60: The Families counting upwards from the present Regent of Tjanjoer [=Chianjur] up to Father Adam, i.e., the genealogy of Dalam Weera Tanoo [=Wira Tanöh] Datar, making him 45th in descent from Adam. Copy. The original of this is in a volume of Mack. Misc.: see the index thereto, S. V. Ohianjur. The spelling has been slightly modified in certain cases.

4, pp. 61-2: Tjianjoer [=Chianjur], 30 September 1812. Genealogical List of the Adipatty Wiera Tanoe [=Adipati Wira Tanoh] Datar Regent of Tjianjoer [=Chianjur]. Copy. This list makes him 43rd in descent from Adam. By P. T. Couperus (author of 1 supra), to which this is an appendix. Presumably translated from the Dutch.

5, pp. 63-8: Chenjoor [=Chianjur], 30 September 1812. State of the Coffee Culture in the Regency of Tjianjoer [=Chianjur]. Copy of a statistical table of the number of persons engaged in coffee cultivation and the age and number of the trees, with statements, of the amount of produce delivered in the years 1808, 1809 and 1810, and remarks on the soil, &c., by districts (20 in number), followed by a summary of the total number of cultivators and trees. An appendix to 1 supra by the same author, and presumably translated from the Dutch.

6, pp. 69-72: Farming condition for the new Bazar of Tjianjour [=Chianjur]. Copy. Fixes the tolls to be paid to the farmer of the market and determines his duties and powers generally. This paper is undated, but is subsequent to a proclamation of 8 December 1801, which it mentions, and prior to 1 supra to which it is an appendix (see the reference on p. 45). Translated from the Dutch.

7, pp. 77-100: Bandong [=Bandung], 2 November 1813 [sic]. Memoir on the Present State of the Regentship of Bandong [=Bandung], 2(d) November 1812 [sic] by Mr. [A.] De Wilde. Being replies to the same set of questions as 1 supra. Copy. The chief matters dealt with are :-p. 77 : Boundaries and extent, rivers, customary services of the population, suggestions for reform in that matter, taxes and duties payable, native chiefS, their revenues ; priests and their revenues ; p. 90 : Particulars relating to rice cultivation, amount of produce from different qualities of soil, taxes payable in produce, idleness of the population, ownership of fruit trees, coffee cultivation, uncultivated land, edible birds' nests. 8, pp. 109-19: Crawang [=Krawang] Memoir by Mr. [W.] Offers [see 9 infra]: Copy. No date given, but the memoir is in the form of a letter addressed to T. S. 9, pp. 121-9 : Indramayoe [=Indramayu], 5 August 1812. Letter from W(s) Offers, Landdrost of Krawang, to the President and Members of the Committee of Enquiry for Java affairs. Encloses the papers following and gives some details on the recent administrative history, the population, &c., of the Residency, with suggestions for works of canalisation for the improvement of rice cultivation, &c., in Krawang.

10, pp. 131-48 : Indramayo [=Indramayu], 30 July 1812. Queries proposed to the Landdrost of Crawang [=Krawang], by the Committee [see 1 supra], on the 21 February 1812, with the answers thereto by W. Offers, Landdrost. Copy. The principal matters dealt with are :-pp. 131-5: Extent of the Residency, allotment of natives among the chiefs, compulsory services and payments for the same, taxes, exemptions, powers of the native chiefs; the remaining answers are rather meagre, being mostly references to supplementary papers which are not annexed.

11, pp. 151-7: Extract from the Resolution of Council, Batavia, 2(d) March 1811. Constitutes an administrative rearrangement of certain territories in Western Java, whereby, inter alia, the Krawang territory was made a separate "landdrost-ambt." Translated from the Dutch. The Dutch original is printed in Van der Chijs, Nederlandsch-Indisch Plakaatboek, 1602-1811, (1897), 16(e) Deel, pp. 591-4, but this does not include the last two paras. of the above, the first of which provides for the appointment of Messrs. Wardenaar and Romswinkel to be a committee for the purpose of making a plan for the digging of a canal to unite the Chimanok [=Chimanuk] and Chicow [=Chikau ?] rivers, and the other decrees the deposition of the Sultan of Cheribon [=Chirĕbon].

12, pp. 159-60: Boundaries of the Residency Krawang, fixed by Resolution of the Governor-General in Council on the 2(d) of March 1811. Consequential on 11 supra. Gives in greater detail the boundaries of the newly-constituted Residency. Translated from the Dutch.

13, pp. 163-4: Extract from the Resolutions of His Excellency the Governor-General in Council. Batavia 17(th) June 1811. Further modifies the boundaries of Krawang and the adjacent districts (Cheribon and the Batavian Regencies). Translated (but apparently not quite literally) from a Dutch original which (with not very material variations) is printed in Van der Chijs, N .- I. Plakaatboek, &c., (1897), 168 Deel, pp. 685-6.

14, pp. 167-9 : Extract from the Proceedings of the Honble. the Vice President in Council Batavia Fridaij the 12: June 1812. Orders, on the representation of W. Offers, Landdrost of Krawang, that the administration of the forests (blaṇḍong) in the Residency should be carried on through the agency of the Regent and Landdrost.

15, p. 171 : Extract from the Register of the Resolutions of his Excellency the Marshall & Governor-General. Samarang [=Sĕmarang] 23. January 1811. Directs the transfer of certain districts in Pamanoekan [=Pamanukan] and Tjiassem [=Chiasĕm] from the coffee cultivation department to the forest department. Evidently translated from the Dutch.

16, pp. 171-2 : Extract from the Register of the Resolutions of his Excellency the Marshall & Governor-Generaal. Batavia 21. February 1811. Fixes (apparently) the remuneration of the overseer of the forests of Pamanoekan [=Pamanukan] in respect of the coffee lands transferred to him by 15 supra at twelve stivers silver money “for each small Picol [=pikul] of Coffy delivered to the Government,” i.e., 126 or 128 pounds. Evidently translated from the Dutch.

17, p. 172 : Extract from the Register of the Resolution of his Excellency the Governor-General of [Netherlands] India. Batavia 2. March 1811. Transfer of the Regent of Buitenzorg to Krawang. Evidently translated from the Dutch.

18, p. 172 : The Governor General of [Netherlands] India to the Land-drost of Krawang. Buitenzorg 19. April 1811. Gives directions as to the remuneration of the new Regent of Krawang (appointed by; 17 supra). Evidently translated from the Dutch.

19, pp. 173-4 : Krawang, 3 July 1812. Genealogical Account of the ancient people who derived their Origin from Mecca (Translated from the Malay). Being genealogical lists of members of the families of the Regents of Sumadang [=Sumĕdang] and Krawang. The last name on the first list is Adipattie Soeriya Nagara [=Adipati Surya Nĕgara] Regent of Sakarangada [sic: evidently a mistranslation of the Malay sekarang ada=(“ who) is now (regent) "].

20, pp. 175-8 : Indramayoe [=Indramayu], 30 July 1812. Detailed statements of the revenues actually enjoyed by the Regent of Krawang and the Tommongongs [=Tumĕnggung] of Indramayoe and Kandanghower [=Kandanghaur] in 1811 and estimates for 1812.

22, pp. 185-94: Batavia, 6 April 1752. Proclamation by Jacob Mossel, Governor:-General of Nethelrands India, referring to the consideration by the Supreme Government on the 4th, 5th, and 7th February 1752, of measures for the encouragement of agriculture, cattle breeding, arts and industry, &c., particularly in Jakatra and the adjoining Preanger country. Contains regulations as to (a) delivery of contingents of pepper and coffee; (b) restriction of free migration of natives from one district to another ; (c) specific, mention in transfers of property of all burdens and taxes to which the property is subject ; (d) prohibition of the slaughter of female buffaloes fit for breeding ; (e) tax of the 20th penny on transfers of land ; (f) valuation by amount of latest sale since 1745 ; (g) duties on bakehouses, sugar mills and arrack distilleries (for some of which matters cf. Van der Chijs, N.-I. Plakaatboek, &c. (1889), 6(e) Deel, under the dates 4th and 5th February 1752, between pp. 167 and 179) and nine other items, beginning with a provision against irregular transfers of land ; embodied from the resolution of the 7th February 1752 (printed ibid., pp. 179-86). 24, pp. 205-8 : Letter from Wm. Wardenaar and J. C. Romswinkel [see 11 supra] to the Lieut.-Governor of Java giving reasons in support of the proposal of the former [Dutch] Government to make a new road from Batavia by way of Krawang to Cheribon [=Chirĕbon].
