'Trumpet made of a shell New Zeland', drawing by Moses Griffith
- Scope & Content:
-
Location: New Zeland [New Zealand]
Recto: Drawing of a trumpet obtained by the Forsters in Queen Charlotte Sound on 4 June 1773 from a party of visiting Maoris during Captain Cook's second voyage. The specimen was given to Thomas Pennant, and acquired by the University Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Cambridge, in 1912. Numbered ‘34’ (top right).
Verso: Inscription: ‘The mouth piece is of wood neatly carved. The ventricose part of the shell cut out, & its place supplied by a piece of coco nut [deleted], cemented; and tacked to the shell with bits of pack thread. Pendant to the beak of the shell is an oval body made of some woven stuff, & seems intended to stop the orifice of the shell to keep out dirt &c. There is also a small cord fastened to each end to carry it or hang it up.’
Formerly mounted on a single folio with f. 35 and f. 36.
