- Title:
- D'Oyly Carte Archive: The Count of Luxembourg (Full score, piano-vocal score, libretto)
- Scope & Content:
-
(1). Full score, arranged by Jonathan Owen Edwards for D'Oyly Carte (1997).
Double-sided A4 format, printed using Sibelius 7 software. Unmarked.
- Title-page and note about the score.
- Act I, pp. 1-185.
- Act II, pp. 186-368.
- Act III, pp. 369-437.
The score is prefaced with a note by Edwards: 'This version was prepared to suit the forces of a smaller company, and a few differences between this score and the currently available vocal scores will be immediately apparent.
The ballet in the Finale Act II (Waltz Intermezzo) has been cut, and the Countess's aria in Act III reinstated, although with only two verses rather than the original four. Also the choral ending to Act III replaces the waltz reprise of the published vocal score.
The full score has harp, celesta and keyboard parts. These first two are the same as the original parts, the last is a concoction of both of the others for orchestras who find it easier to use an electronic instrument.'
(2). Piano-vocal score, as unbound A4 sheets (single-sided), printed using Sibelius 7 software.
- Title-page and Contents. Publisher: Glocken Verlag Ltd, London. Score based upon the production by New Sadler's Wells Opera (1983), revived on tour by D'Oyly Carte in 1997.
- Act I, pp. [5]-73.
- Act II, pp. 74-138.
- Act III, pp. 139-41, 141a-d, 142-57.
(3). Piano-vocal score changes, as nine unbound A4 sheets. Including a note: 'Herewith the 'extras' for 'The C. of L.' / That is the final chorus, and the Countess's number'.
(4). Libretto. Word-processed document. 'This version adapted for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company by Chris Monks':
- Act I, pp. 1-31;
- Act II, pp. 32-57;
- Act III, pp. 58-9, 59A, 60-70.
Attached to p. 59 is a yellow 'post-it' note: 'Removed after the death of Princess Diana'. Substitute p. 59A comprises revised words for No. 17A 'The Countess' Song', omitting the following verse: 'A businessman can always be a knave / And his wife may scarcely bat an eye, / But if a Prince should dare to misbehave / It's enough to make his Princess Di!'. The replacement verse makes topical reference to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
