p. i: Literary tracts on Java collected or translated from various sources of Information in 1811, 12 & 13 by Mackenzie.
, pp. 1-19: Translation of the Preface to the 1(st) Volume of the Transactions of the Batavian Society at Batavia instituted in March 1779. also the Regulations & Rules of the Batavian Society with the Speeches of the President Director & of the Director Van Alting for the Governor General at the First Meeting of the Batavian Society March 1779. Translated from the Dutch of the l(st) Volume of the Transactions of the Batavian Society. [=Verhandelingen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap der Kunsten en Wetenschappen (1779), 18 Deel, Voorbericht, wegens den tegenwoordigen staat van het Bataviaasch Genootschap, pp. 3-44]. Another copy is in Mack. General Collection, LXXII. 3.
, pp. 23-39: Batavia, 4 February 1790. Programme published by the Batavian Society of Arts & Sciences for the Years 1783-90. Is not printed in the Verhandelingen, &c., but is probably the Programma noticed in Van der Chijs, Proeve eener Ned. Indische Bibliographie (under 1791, No. 4) and referred to in Verhand., &c. (1792), 6(e) Deel, Voorberigt, p. 17. It includes a brief sketch of the history of the Society, which, after a good beginning, had fallen into decay owing largely to the departure or death of a number of members whose names are here set out at length. With their respective ranks, offices, &c. It concludes with several proposals for the improvement of the Society's position. Translated from the Dutch original issued in the name of the Society by Carel Saxe, Secretary.
, pp. 43-7: Relation or Narrative of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences. Concerning the direction of the Batavian Society of Arts & Sciences. Presumably translated from the Dutch work noted in Van der Chijs, Proeveeener Ned. Inclische Bibliographie, s. 1802, No. 3, and referred to in Verhand., &c. (1814), 7(e) Deel, Voorberigt, pp. i-ii. The translation, after reciting the causes that led to the decay of the Society, sets out a new set of rules (16 arts., appended here (pp. 45-7) under the heading New Regulations for the Batavian Society of Arts & Science), which were adopted by the governing body of the Society after the approval of Government had been duly obtained.
, pp. 49-60 : Collection of Natural History by Baron von Wumb [lege van Wumb]. Translated from the Transactions of the Batavian Society Vol: IV: P 543. November 6(th) 1804. [=Verhand. v. h. Bat. Gen. d. K. en W. (1786), 4(e) Deel, pp. 545-65.] It includes a curious notice of tin-mining in Pera [=Perak], Malay Peninsula, which is, however, derived purely from hearsay, no Europeans being permitted access to the mines at that time. The rest of the paper deals mainly with precious stones and metallic ores. 86. I. 12 and 13 infra, q. v., are extracts from the same translation. Another copy is in Mack. General Collection, LXXII. 11. Translated from the Dutch.
, pp. 61-6: Report concerning the Customs & Usages of the Inhabitants of the Hill of Brama & of that Neighbourhood on the Island of Java. From a Letter of Mr Adriaan van Ryck Commandant of Passarouang [=Pasuruan] to the deceased Mr Hooyman written on the 26th of May 1787 [in original 1785] Translated from the [7th] Volume of the Batavia Society's Researches. Also includes (pp. 65-6). Account as given by the Oldest Inhabitants of Brama Tenger [= Tĕnggĕr] & the other neighbouring Hills mentioning their pr•esent ideas of the Ancient Origin & of the Cause that only Onions &(ca) are planted but no Paddy. Translated from the Dutch of Verhand., &c. (1814), 7(e) Deel, II, pp. 1-8, omitting an unimportant footnote. 9. 2 supra is another copy.
, pp. 71-7: Sourabaya [=Surabaya], 31 March 1806. Letter from Thomas Horsfield to the Directing Members of the Batavian Society, translated from the Dutch of loc. cit. (1814), 7(e) Deel, IV, pp. 1-16, being an account of a tour along the Solo river, &c.
, pp. 79-84: Sourabaya [=Surabaya], 28 February 1807. Letter from the same to the same, on a .tour in Eastern Java, translated from the Dutch of loc. cit., pp. 17-31.
, pp. 85-92: Remarks on some Hills in the Jacatra [=Jakatra] Preanger Lands. A detailed description of the mountains of that region, from the points of view of topography, geology, &c., with particular reference to the volcanic character of most of them and a discussion on the disintegration of the lava, illustrated by a detailed description of Goenoeng Goentoer [=Gunung Guntur]. Translated from the Dutch. Begins: "During a journey thro' the Jacatra Preanger Lands, in the Months of June & July (AC [blank]) our Road brought me often into the proximity of the hills of the Western parts of the Island." Ends: "In the Climate of this Island the violent degree of the Sun's heat & the continual Rains, are still more effectual in the speedy dissolution of the Lava."
, pp. 93-6: Memoir on the Proceedings of the Batavian Society by Mr Sevenhoven October 1812. A sketch of the history of the Society from its commencement in 1778, giving an account of its vicissitudes. The British occupation of Java gave a much needed stimulus to the Society, as the writer of this memoir anticipated that it would. He also gives due credit to Thomas Horsfield for his botanical researches. The memoir may be compared with Verhand. v. h. Bat. Gen. der K. en W. (1814), 7(e) Deel, Voorberigt, which (though not identical) covers much the same ground. The author was presumably the J. I. van Sevenhoven, whose name appears in the list of members of the Society, loc. cit., p. iii.
, pp. 97-153: Remarks & Observations on the Ruins of Prambana[n] in Java. (a) pp. 99-126: Narrative of a Journey to examine the Remains of an Antient City & Temples at Prambana[n] in Java. Extracted from the Journal of Lieut(t) Colonel Mackenzie. Another copy of 82. 34 infra, q.v. On p. 101 there is an unfinished sketch of a shrine or " chapel" which is not reproduced in 82. 34. (b) pp. 127-38 : Description of a Bramin temple situated on the South Side of the Island of Java about 40 Roods North of the Great Road going from Souracarta [=Surakarta] to Djocjacarta [=Jokyakarta] in the Environs of Brambanang [=Prambanan] near the Toll-house of Calassan (=Kalasan] known to the Natives by the name of Tjandie-Saarie [=Chaṇḍi Sari] Written in Dutch by Major Cornelius-Translated 13(th) January 1813. The Dutch original is 28. 12 supra, g. v. (c) pp. 139-53: Description of a Bramin Temple situated in the High Lands of Java on the North Side of the Great Road leading from Souracarta [=Surakarta] to Djocjacarta [=Jokyakarta] to the West of the River Calie-Oepak [=Kali Upak] in the Environs of Brambanang [=Prambanan] denominated Chandee-Seevoo [=Chaṇḍi Sewu]. A very full and detailed account, but partly in pencil, with some omissions. Evidently translated from the Dutch. Probably the original was written by the author of (b) supra. For the literature on the subject, see Verhand. v. h. Bat. Gen. v. K. en W. (1891), Deel XLVI, pp. 186-8.
, pp. 155-7: Report made by M. Leschenault, travelling Naturalist, relative to a Lake of sulphuric acid, found on the Eastern coast of the Isle of Java. from the Analectic Magazine Vol 3 Philadelphia 1814 P 161. For another description of the river, see Mack. Class XIV, 7 (g).

C.] Reinwardt to observe the eruption of Goonong Goontoor [=Gunung, Guntur], which began on 21 October, and was preceded on 2 October by an earthquake. Contains some geological particulars.
