Collection on the Natural History of Java.
On the inside of the cover is noted: "Communicated by Mr. Knops in the original hand and translated by L. R. Burke for C. Mackenzie.... Some of the Memoirs were translated into Dutch for Mr. M. Englehart, by whom Mr. Leschenault was employed ...." M. Elienne Leschenault de la Tour [Sometimes he is spoken of as Mr. Leschenault and sometimes as Latour. See Blagden, loc. cit.] is the author of the greater part of the volume, but Mr. Middleton's name is attached to No. 6. (Previously Listed as Missing/ Unidentified from the 1916 Blagden catalogue)
1, pp. 1-82: List of plants of the Island of Java observed by Mr. Leschenault de la Tour. There are 693 entries. The last page is signed and dated 5th January 1806. [copy.]
2, pp. 93-115: Quadrupeds of the Island of Java. Signed Leschenhault de la Tour. Samarang, 26th August 1806. [Copy.]
3, pp. 131-155: Catalogue of the Birds of the Island of Java observed by Mr. Leschenault De la Tour. Dated 26th August 1806. [Copy.]
4, pp. 169-176: Description of the Mountain of Tengar in the District of Passarauang. Signed Leschenhault de la Tour. 15th February 1806. Blagden records an account of the Tengger Mountains (Pr. 86, I, 4), but it is of a later date. [Copy.]
5, pp. 185-194: Report and description of a Journey to the Sulphur Mountain and Volcano of Indienne near Banyoewange. Also a description of the White River or Songie Pootie. See 287, 14 above, and Mss Eur Mack Private 36, 11.
6, pp. 225-290: Memoir of the Most remarkable Trees, Plants, Quadrupeds, Birds, Fishes, Serpents, Snakes, Insects and Butterflies which are found in the Forests, Rivers and Lakes of the Island of Java. (? By Mr. Middleton, 1812.) (a), pp. 227-237: Description of the most remarkable trees. (b), pp. 239-242: A short description of medicinal plants. (c), pp. 243-252: Description of quadrupeds. (d) pp. 253- 256: Description or birds. (e), pp. 257-262: Descriptions of divers sort of fish which are found in the sea and waters of the Island of Java. (f), pp. 269-274: Description of serpents and snakes. (g), pp. 277-281: Description of butterflies. (h), pp. 285-290: Description of insects and reptiles. Most of the entries are rather thin, e.g. under butterflies "Parthous is very scarce and pretty" is typical.
7, pp. 263-266: Letter from C. Van Naerssens to Colonel Mackenzie, dated Batavia, 17th March 1812. Marked "Recd 27 Mar. Sorabaya." Description of a curious animal seen in the district of Grisee. This is the original of 287, 8.
