Copy. In Dutch. This forms a continuation of the series of reports of Dutch Governors of the Coromandel Coast, contained in 47.I. and 47.II. supra, q.v. See also 48 supra. The main subjects dealt with are:- p. 8: Coromandel, its situation, boundaries, political history, native administration of the various subdivisions under the Moghuls, Dutch settlements in these different provinces; English, French, and Danish possessions; customary presents given periodically by the Dutch to the native rulers; privileges granted to the Dutch, with a number of historical and geographical details relating thereto, and to the history of Southern India in general during part of the 17th and 18th centuries, including some account of the Marattha conquests of Tanjore, &c.; p. 30: Particular descriptions of the several Dutch stations, viz., Negapatam, its councils and officials for administrative, judicial, municipal, ecclesiastical, and other purposes; mint and currency; arsenal, artillery, ammunition, fortifications, hospital, warehouses, stores, vessels, coastwise navigation and trade, &c.; p. 46 : Rice; revenue farms; repair of public buildings; various branches of trade; trade and intercourse with Ceylon; correspondence with the Dutch stations in Bengal, Surat, Persia, and Yalabar; Calimere, the recognized boundary between the spheres of influence of Coromandel and Ceylon; audit of books, maintenance of cash balances in the local treasuries, &c.; suburbs and adjacent villages and their inhabitants; toleration of Roman Catholic worship; weaving of cotton goods; p. 62 : Portonovo; Tegenepatnam; Conjemere; Alemperwe (these three stations now abandoned) ; historical and descriptive account of Sadras and adjacent villages; Pulicat and the Dutch possessions and privileges there, history and description of the place; p. 79: Masulipatam and neighbourhood, a decayed station; the abandoned post of Golconda; Palicol, Daatcherom, Narsapur, Coringa; new station at Jaggernaikpoeram, an island near Kakienara [=presumably Coconada]; Bimlipatam; (throughout the above there is much general information, especially about conditions of trade and relations with the neighbouring native rulers); p. 97: Relations with foreign European traders and shipping (British, Danish, Ostenders, Swedish, Spanish); the cotton goods trade, a description of the system on which it was conducted, with lists of the native merchants at the several stations, and other statistics, and Government instructions relating to the trade; p. 112 : Miscellaneous and general trade (sugar, spices, pepper) metals, camphor, alum, cowries, asafretida, &c.), with constant references to Government instructions regarding the same; p. 125: Shipping and the Government orders relating thereto; p. 131: A variety of miscellaneous matters (inter alia the proceedings of the French at Karikal).
