The chief matters dealt with are:- The relative values of the different currencies, and of gold and silver in India (as compared with Europe, and as affecting a proposal to reckon the pagoda at fl. 6); the different rates of exchange adopted by the Dutch and English respectively; p. 29: Trade of coromandel: its geographical extent by land in India (with a list of the chief articles of trade), and by sea with Acheen, Burma, Bengal, and Surat; export trade in cotton goods and other local products; p. 32: Coromandel currency and mint; exchange and value of the pagoda; the fanams of Negapatam, Portonovo, Sadras, and Pulicat; Kilkare currency and the Madura fanam, their effect on trade; difference between English and Dutch rates of exchange; assay of the Madura fanam; p. 49: Proposal to treat the fanam as equal to 5 stivers, discussed from the point of view of its effect on the trade of Coromandel and Ceylon, &c.; consideration of the relative values of gold and silver, with special reference to the exchange value of Bengal rupees; p. 66: Bengal trade (in silks, cottons, opium, saltpetre, &c.), its annual turnover; the commercial advantages and disadvantages of Bengal as compared with Coromandel; foreign competition; the trade between Bengal, Coromandel, Ceylon, Malabar, and Surat, and the local trade of some of these places; values of moneys current in Malabar; p. 86: Intrinsic and conventional values of the currencies of Ceylon, Coromandel, Malabar, Bengal, and Surat; statistics of the sales of spices (mace, cloves, and nutmegs) in Coromandel for the years 1728/9-1737/8, and similar details for Hooghly, 1727/8-1733/4, showing the effects of the raising of the prices in 1728/9--1730/1; a 10 per cent. Rise in the price of spices throughout India recommended; not, however, in the price of cinnamon; statistics of the sales of spices for the years 1731/2-1733/4 in Coromandel, Bengal, Surat, Ceylon (with Kilkare), Malabar (Cochin),. and Persia, the total value amounting to ft. 841,552.
