pp. 7-200: Translation of Extracts out of old Javeneese manuscripts found in the Country of the Sultan of Mataram in the month of June 1812 . . . Portions of the Dutch version through which this translation was made, are contained in two volumes of Mack. Misc. The whole is in another volume of Mack. Misc. This curious jumble of myths begins (p. 7) :- 1. " Before the Heaven, the Earth, the Water, & the welkin or sky / Clouds were brought forth by Nature, at that time existed two Beings, called Rahie Boel Roeyot [=Ghaibu-'l-ghuyub] & Nachto Raib [=Nuḳt̤ah (?) ghaib]; Both these invisible beings were together named Ayan Sabito [=A'yān thābitah]; their presence, abode & their figure are unknown to Posterity; they have notwithstanding existed in the Period/time of Alam Arwa [='Alamu-'l-arwāḥ]. 2. " After these two invisible beings the Creator of nature produced a third invisible Spirit called Roch Hapie [=Ruḥ Idhāfī ?]. The Almighty God formed of the Spirit of this Roch Hapie a figure or model called Srie Wessie [=Sri Wĕsi]; according as living souls were made; & this was done in the time of Alam Insal." After a good deal more of this cosmogony, which is mainly Muhammadan in terminology, we get to the story of Adam and his descendants, one of whom Ratoe Brahama [=Ratu Brahma] was (p. 13) " brought by a certain Alam daood from Zelam [=Ceylon ?] out of the Kingdom of Indostany in[to] the Country of Java at Medang Kamolan [=Mĕṇḍang Kĕmulan], for to Colonise this Coast." Chapter II (p. 16) has the sub-heading: Treating about Daemon Ijajil who is before mentioned as an Immortal being: It is concerned with the creation of Eang (or Hang) Wieseso [=Hyang Wisesa], Heaven and Earth, Manik Moyo [=Maya] (already briefly mentioned in Chapter I, p. 8), and, a number of Dewas, amongst whom are divided the letters of the Javanese alphabet; also with the formation of the island of Java by Dewas, among whom Bettoro Goeroe [=Batara Guru] plays a leading part. With this and the next few chapters, which are based (with variations, however) on the Serat Manik Maya, cf. the Dutch version of that work under the name Javaansche Mythologie in Tijdschr. voor Ned.Indië (1843), 5(e) Jaarg., l(e) Deel, pp. 1 seqq. (also in French in the Moniteur des Indes, 1848-9, pp. 295 seqq.). Chapter VI (p. 38) gives an account of the four periods of the world's history, evidently based on the Hindu Yugas. Chapter VII (p. 40) is on Watoe Goenoong [= Watu Gunung] (cf. 9. 3 supra, 72. IV and V infra, &c;), and the descent of the Javanese princes from Dewa Bettoro Bromo [=Baṭara Brama =Brahma]. Chapter VIII (p. 42) deals with the legendary history of the colonisation of Java, beginning" In the former Centuries was a Roman Emperor residing in Rome, he dreamed a certain night, that there was a Island called Tana Jowo [=Tanah Jawa, ' the land of Java ']" . . . This legend eventually (in Chapter IX, p. 56) leads up to the career of Adjie Sokko [=Aji Saka] (foretold in the Roman Emperor's dream, p. 44). With Aji Saka's settling in Java and subsequent exploits the rest of the work is chiefly filled up. Ultimately he has to fight with a rival named Danisworo [=Daniswara], son of Dewa Tatjengkar [=Dewata Chĕngkar] (see pp. 52-5), and the work ends with the departure and disappearance of Adjee Sokko [=Aji Saka] and the arrival of the new conquering sovereign Danisworo into the Kingdom of Medang Kamolan [=Mĕṇḍang Kemulan] :- (p. 198) "The new Sovereign Danisworo having taken charge of the Government of the whole Island of Java and having taken the Sovereignty upon himself he removed his Court to the easterly part of Medang Kamolan in the district of Damaks [=Dĕmak] and did give his new Capital the name of Medang Paremesan [=Mĕṇḍang Paramesan]." The author after paying the usual tribute to the excellence of the new king's government and its ' appreciation by his subjects and neighbours, including "the wandering Spirits of the Island of Java," goes on to record the fact that Prince Danisworo changed the names of five of his principal wives, giving them the honorific titles of Ratoe Pamenang [=Ratu Pamĕnang], R. Wetan [=wetan, "east"], R. Ler [=1or, "north"], R. Koelon [=kulon, "west"], and R. Panenga [=panĕngah, "middle "]. The work concludes: "The descendants of these five wives shall from generation to generation be Sovereigns of Padjang [=Pajang] & Mattarm [=Mataram] so that the Sovereigns of Java are descended from the race of Angels."—The colophon adds: "This Book is written at Djocjocarta [=Jokyakarta] on Monday Legee [=lĕgi, the 2nd day of the Javanese marketweek], the 16th of the month Poeasa [=puwasa, "fasting," i.e., Ramazan] in the Javanese year Jumawal [=jim awal, the 3rd year in the 8-year cycle] 1708 or in the year 1780 according to the Dutch era (: which is now 1813 year 32 years ago."
