List of collections of official papers in Government House, Batavia, 1811
- Scope & Content:
-
1, pp. 1-63: Batavia, 23 December 1811. Copy. List of collections of official papers in Government House, Batavia, on the above date, being the second part of the whole (the first is in 67 supra). Divided into sections with separate headings here given. I add the English headings and page references from 2 infra for convenience of reference (p. 1 is also headed Reflections on various subjects, which was apparently intended as a translation of the next heading) :-
(a) pp. 1-33: Speculatieve Papieren (Speculative Papers for an observer pp. 71-126) : A miscellaneous collection, including many memoirs, and dealing with a large number of places and subjects connected with the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia, Malacca, Ceylon, India proper, Japan, &c.; in lots numbered 1-256 (but there are some half numbers inserted), A.D. 1617-1792;
(b) pp. 33-44 : Demonstrantie (Demonstrations, pp. 126-47): lots 1-88 (and half numbers), 1690-1806; another list of miscellaneous items;
(c) pp. 44-7: Papieren op Fundament onzer Prohibitive order om ergens vreemde Scheepen te admitteeren (Papers relative to the orders no where to admit foreign Ships pp. 147-52): lots 1-22 (and half numbers), 1719-95;
(d) pp. 47-56: Papieren relatie[f] tot den Raad van Justitie dezes Kasteels (Papers relative to the Court of Justice at Batavia, pp. 152-67): lots 1-59, 1701-1807;
(e) pp. 56-62: Papieren betrekkelijk de Scheeps- en ZeeZaeken (Papers relative to Ships Concerns and affairs of the Sea, pp. 167-74): lots 1-39, 1703-1807;
(f) pp. 62-3: Register der Papieren Sisteerende die aangaande de Liberaale Giften (Registar or List of Papers concerning the free gifts, pp. 174-6): lots A-H, 17 2/3 [sic]- 1792. The term "liberale gift" is a pleasant euphemism for a special form of taxation, as to which see the references in Van der Chijs, Nederlandsch-Indisch Plakaatboek, 1602-1811, especially 6(e) Deel (1889), pp. 126-53, and 11(e) Deel. (1893), pp. 319-34. It was apparently introduced in 1751, and I imagine the first date above given to be an error for 1752-3.
The headings (a)-(f) are given in a volume of Mack. Misc., where the (f) heading has the dates 1752-92. The entries describe the contents of several files in general terms, but (unlike those in 31-4 supra and 93. I and 11 infra) do not give dockets of the individual documents. See also 4. 2, 4 and 67 supra and 83 infra, and also Mack. 1822. 18. 4 supra. 2, pp. 71-176: English translation of 1 supra, q.v. This was originally numbered 66 in this collection.
