1, pp. 1-13: Sorabaija [=Surabaya], 21 May 1808. Inventaaris, van de Artillerie te Sorabaya. Original report, in the form of a letter signed by p(r) Lieut. Osman and Lieut. Gruber and addressed to Captain F. E. Desautels, giving particulars of the guns, ammunition, and other appliances at the five posts or forts, and also those of the field artillery.
2, p. 17: Buitenzorg, 7 January 1809. Extract uit het Register der besluiten van Zijne Excellentie den Marschalk en gouverneur generaal. Appointment of Capt. F. E. Desautels to be Lieut.-Col. and Commandant of Fort Lodewijk.
3, p. 19: Another copy of the preceding.
4, p. 23: Sourabaija [=Surabaya], 18 May 1809. Original statement in Dutch, signed by S. Du Crok, regarding Lieut.-Col. F. E. Desautels' indebtedness to the local treasury to the amount of 243 rixdollars, 26 stivers, in respect of the value of 417(12) ells of blue Javanese cloth. Certified correct by Lieut.-Col. Moppert, War Commissary.
5, pp. 25, 28: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 19 May 1809. Original letter in French, from S. Du Crok to Lieut.-Col. F. E. Desautels, enclosing and explaining the preceding, with other financial details.
6, pp. 29-30: Fort Lodewijk, [latter end of] September 1809. Original letter in Dutch from Lieut.-Col. F. E. Desautels to Brigadier Gaupp. Contains Military information and encloses a list of requirements (rice, pepper, arrack, &c.) for the garrison. Gaupp's reply is noted in the margin and signed by him.
7, pp. 33-4: Rough draft of preceding letter.
8, pp. 35-7: Fort Lodewijk 11 October 1810. Draft letter in Dutch (unsigned but presumably by Desautels) to Brigadier Gaupp, reporting on certain deficiencies discovered in the supplies at the fort. Mack. Class XIV, 6 (b), is an English version (which, however, omits a paragraph added here at the end).
9, pp. 39-42: Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 14 October 1810. Original letter in French from Capt. Nicolas Schmitt to Lt.-Col. F. E. Desautels, purely personal.
10, pp. 43-4: Sourabaya [=Surabaya], 18 May 1811. Original letter in Dutch from V. (?) G. Hart, purely personal.
11, p. 47: Fort Lodewijk, 22 December 1810. Indent-in Dutch on the artillery store for some ironware to be supplied stnd repaired.
12, pp. 49-52: Sourabaija [=Surabaya], 11 March 1811. Original letter in French from A. Schutter to Lieut.-Col. F. E. Desautels. Purely personal, the only point of general interest noted being the scarcity of silver money.
13, pp. 53-6: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 5 .July 1811. Original letter in French from S. Du Crok to Lt.-Col. Desautels, requiring the services of a European sergeant and twelve Javanese non-commissioned officers as instructors; announcing the arrival at Banyuwangi of a French brig with six officers and twelve non-commissioned officers as well as some stores for Government; and also mentioning matters of purely personal interest. It appears from this letter that at this time 50 Probolinggo paper-money dollars were worth 30 silver rixdollars.
14, pp. 57-60: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 11 July 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, criticizing unfavourably the Javanese non-commissioned officers and objecting to certain changes made without authority in their artillery drill; commenting on the uselessness of a pontoon in the roads, manned by fifteen European gunners; giving instructions for strengthening the fort in case of an attack from the rear; and reporting four British frigates in the neighbourhood, besides other matters of Military interest.
15, pp. 61-2: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 23 June 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, on matters of Military detail, chiefly on the strengthening of the garrison by thirty European gunners sent to the fort.
16, pp. 65-6, 68: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 15 July 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, on the subjects mentioned in 14 supra and other Military matters, particularly the frequent cases of desertion among the Javanese soldiers (for which offence the punishment was 150 lashes), and matters of personal interest.
17, pp. 69, 71: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 30 July 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, transmitting an order for a European or Eurasian non-commissioned officer to be sent as postholder to Panaroekari [=Panarukan]; also a drummer, to act as instructor with the legion.
18, pp. 73, 76: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 3 August 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, returning five of the Javanese non-commissioned officers as unserviceable and asking for five better ones, or failing them five gunners; the sergeant sent to Panarukan to be retained on the list as seconded.
19, pp. 77, 80: Sourabaja [=Surabaya], 6 August 1811. Original letter in French from the same to the same, referring to the salutes to be fired on the occasion of the Emperor's anniversary day, and to the translation of the drill books into French, &c.
20 , p. 81 : Meester Cornelis, 8 August 1811. Copy of a letter in Dutch from Gov(r)-Gen(1) Janssens to Col. Boions, certified by the latter, transferring the command of Fort Lodewijk from La Pirsonne to Desau tels and ordering the former to rejoin Janssens.
21, p. 85: Sourabaya [=Surabaya], 14 August 1811. Letter in French from Col. Boions (presumably to La Pirsonne) transmitting 20 supra. Probably an original.
22, pp. 89-93: Batavia, 20 February 1811. Dutch proclamation by Gov(r)-Gen(1) H. W. Daendels embodying Napoleon's decree of 9 July 1810 annexing Holland to the French Empire, with consequential provisions; Copy. Appeared in the Bataviasche Koloniale Courant of 22 February 1811; also printed in Van der Chijs, Nederlandsch-Indisch Plakaatboek, 1602-1811, (1897), 16(e) Deel, p. 575, 1. 20-p. 581, 1. 3. Cf. the account of the occasion in Collet, L'Ile de Java sous la Domination Franqaise, pp. 355 seqq. (where the date is wrongly given as 20 December.)

Copy of a letter in French from the same to the same, about matters of Military detail; also mentioning the presence of the British forces at Weltevreden preparatory to an attack on Meester Cornelis, and expressing the hope that they may all get putrid fever.
27, pp. 111-14: Soorabaja [=Surabaya], 4 September 1811. Copy of a letter in French from the same to the same, stating that the artillery of the fort is to be required shortly to furnish a detachment of two officers and 50 non-commissioned officers and gunners to proceed to Sĕmarang, where the Dutch General after his defeat at Meester Cornelis had retired ; and recommending that the floating battery (probably the pontoon referred to in 14 supra) should be evacuated.
