5, pp. 37-43: Jaffnapatam, 7 October 1784. Letter of Mr [Carl Frederik ? Schreuder to Governor Van de Graaff on the subject of the Jaffna Tabacco exported to the Mallabar Coast. The chief subjects dealt with are :-The amount of tobacco exported ; the methods adopted by the merchants for financing the cultivator ; warehousing ; the tobacco monopoly of the Travancore Government ; the cost of the tobacco to the exporters ; the question whether the Dutch Company could profitably manage the trade itself ; understatements of the amounts exported ; the advantage to the Jaffna inhabitants of the Company taking over the trade. It appears that the return cargo from Malabar was chiefly pepper. Translated from the Dutch of 72. III. 10 infra.

6, (a) pp. 45-6: Jaffnapatam, 12 September 1793. Letter from John Verwyk to Willem Jacob Van de Graaf, Governor of Ceylon forwarding (b) infra, q.v. The writer gives as his qualification a residence of eight years in the Marrewah [=Marava] country, where he had an opportunity of examining the manufacture of cloth, and offers his services as adviser in the matter to the Dutch Company. In English, being either a copy of the English original or a retranslation from the Dutch of 72. III. 16 infra-. (b) pp. 46-8: Memorandum enclosed in the above letter, recommending the cultivation of cotton and manufacture of cloth at Jaffnapatam and its neighbourhood. This, like the preceding, is in English ; it corresponds to the Dutch of 72. III. 17 infra. (c) pp. 49-54: Colombo, 5 December 1793. A. Plan to carry on the Cloth manufacture at Jaffnapatam. By the author of (a) supra, who here gives details of his plan, which he proposed to superintend himself. He bargained for ten per cent. and a free hand in managing the employees, on the ground that as the weavers are in every Country the most wicked people they ought to be treated on a peculiar manner, and therefore when I shall be obliged to act in earnest with them for bad conduct in the service of the Company, and to compell them to the fulfilment of their Contract, they ought not to be protected by the Gentlemen in power at Jaffna, for if they should interfere with the weavers or with others belonging to this department, no orders shall be obeyed, which I shall find necessary to issue for promoting the affairs of the Company. This corresponds to the Dutch of 72. III. 15 infra.

7, pp. 57-71: A number of lists of places in Southern India where cloth was woven, with details as to the number of looms in use and the amounts annually produced in the several localities. These appear to have been situated mainly in the Tirnelvely [=Tinnevelly] district, the Pollygar country, and Madure [=Madura]. The merchants who purchased the cloth belonged chiefly to Tutucoreen [=Tuticorin], Ponnecayl, and Mannapar. Translated from the Dutch of 72. III. 1 infra.

8, pp. 73-6: Surat, 6 December 1790.(a) pp. 73-5: Memorandum regarding the Cotton Culture in Surat. By Johannes Kooper (in the Dutch original Kuper). Describes the cultivation in considerable detail, and also gives some information as to the subsequent treatment of the product. (b) pp. 75-6: Regarding the Cultivation of Wheat. A brief notice only at the end of the article on cotton, by the same author. Both are translated from the Dutch of 72. III. 7 infra.

9, pp. 77-99: Colombo, June 1797. Letter f'rorn the Governor Angelbeek to [Sir John Shore, Bart.] the Governor General of Fort William containing request to do away with the Tax imposed upon and levied by order of Mr Andrews on Cocoanut trees &(ca). The tax amounted to one silver fanam or two-fifths of a rupee on every fruit-bearing coconut tree with the exception of gardens containing less than fifty trees. A number of objections to this tax are made and discussed in considerable detail in this letter, which contains a good deal of interesting information on the economic aspect of coconut cultivation as carried on in Ceylon at this period. In addition to this there is much general information about the different races and castes inhabiting the island, the form of land tenure and the compulsory services rendered to the Government and chiefs by ancient custom as part of the revenue system, and the extortions practised under the new system, &c. 11, pp. 105-13: Colombo, 5 April 1765. Plan for the Solemn funeral of the Noble Mr Lubbert Jan Baron Van Eck, Extra ordinary councellor of Netherlands India, Governor and Director of the Island of Ceylon with the dependencies thereof, died on the 1(st) of April 1765 at 3 oClock in the morning, as it was regulated by two Members of the Ceylon Gov(t) Peter Liebert Schmidt and Jan Hendrik Borwater as being on that day requested and commissioned to that Purpose in the Council of Ceylon, to be performed on the 5th of the said month at 5 Colock in the afternoon. 12, pp. 117-22: Funeral Procession of Raja Sinha Emperor of the Island of Ceylon, performed within the Fort of Colombo. This was Raja Singha II, who died 6 December 1687. The account here given was written after the event, of which it gives a full description; at the end it quaintly sets out the titles of the deceased in the European sty le, viz.: "Emperor of the Island of Ceylon, King of Kandy, Situak, Cotta, Danbardoon, Anorajepoore, Jaffnapatam Prince of Oowa, Maturah, Dina Varcah the 4 Provinces, Grand ,Duke of the 7 Provinces, Count of Koetjar, Baticalo, Vitani, Panax, Puttelan, Belligam, Marquis of Deveniva, Atteneira, Tenepana Lord of the Harbours of Ceylon, the Pearl fisheries and of the golden Sun." 13, pp. 125-32: List of some words used in the Dutch and Chingalay [=Sinhalese] languages in the service of the Company. Includes lists of terms referring to land tenure and agriculture, native officials, castes, and the like, titles of honour, and a few idiomatic phrases, metaphors and figures of speech, all duly explained. Translated from the Dutch of 72. III. 3 infra.

14, pp. 133-5: Tuticorin, 9 January 1728. Translation of a Malabar Olla in form of a Compromise mutually [agreed upon] between the Cloth Merchants of the Coast of Madure [=Madura], This was an arrangement between the merchants of Tutucoreen [=Tuticorin], Alwaternagery and Manapar; to avoid disputes leach set undertook to buy cloth only from certain specified villages and not to interfere with the villages allotted to the other sets. The agreed penalty was a payment of 150 pardaus to be made to the fund for the poor administered by the Dutch Protestant Church and forfeiture to the Dutch Company of the cloth improperly purchased.
