p. i: Correspondence of Col(l) Mackenzie (to & from) in Java-1812-13.

1, pp. 1-3: Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 17 January 1812. Original letter in Dutch from J. O. Vincent to F. von Winckelman[n] on the ancient stone buildings of Java (presumably stupas and temples, as they are here styled" piramiden"), which the writer naively attributes to Adjie Soko [=Aji Saka, the mythical founder of the Śaka era], with specific mention of two stones on the hill of Toegoe [=Tugu] near Sĕmarang and a description of other remains, including two carvings of "koebeesten" (cows or oxen), situated at a place named Grobiak, near Bantam. See 12 infra. Verbeek, Verh. v. h. Bat. Gen. v. K. en W. (1891), Deel XLVI, p. 88, mentions only one stone at Tugu. I have found no reference to the Grobiak remains.

2, pp. 5-6: 23 September 1812. Original letter in Dutch from J. O. Vincent on the difficulties involved in translating a Javanese work for Col. Mackenzie. See 6 (a) infra.

3, p. 7 : Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 15 August 1812: Original note in Dutch from J. O. Vincent containing a list of Javanese works received by him from Col. Mackenzie for the purpose of being translated into Dutch.

4, p. 9: Short note in Dutch (presumably from J. O. Vincent) on a translation from the Javanese. Copy? See 6 (a) infra.

5, p. 11: Letter in Dutch (presumably from J. G. Vincent), soliciting an appointment for the Ki Dipatti [= Kyahi Adipati], late of Damak [=Dĕmak], the author of the work translated in 9. 3 and 72. IV and V supra, with a suggestion that certain villages recently attached to Samarang [=Sĕmarang] should be reunited with Dĕmak. Copy? See 6 (a) infra.

6, (a) pp. 13-14: English translations of 2, 4 and 5 supra, q.v. (b) pp. 14-17: Ortography, & Etymology of the Principlest Places at Java, being short local legends and popular etymologies relating to Samarang [=Sĕmarang], Oengaran [=Ungaran], Salatiga, &c., &c. Copy.

7, pp. 19-20: Extract in Dutch from the history of Watu Gunung, beginning: "De kinderen welke gebooren zijn onder het gesternte van Joeloeng wangie [=Julung wangi] . . . " and ending "waar door zij hun geluk zullen bevorderen, en aan hunne kostwinning 'koomen." It corresponds with the first, uncorrected, text of 72. V supra, pp. 47-8, and with 9.3 supra, p. 123 (save the last paragraph).

9, pp. 31-43: Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 20 October 1812. Original letter in Dutch from J. G. Vincent to Col. Mackenzie, relating to his translation of the history of Watoe Goenoong [=Watu Gunung], Javanese legendary history, its connexion with India, the different styles of speech comprised in the Javanese language and explanations of certain examples illustrating the figurative mode of expression used.

10, pp. 51-2, 54: 7 January [1812]. Original letter in English from F. von Winckelmann to Col. Mackenzie, referring to a manuscript of Vincent's and to an inscribed stone at a village named Babaccang in the district of Batang, Paccalongang [=Pĕkalongan]. Possibly this may be the inscription figured in Raffes, History of Java (1827), II, facing p. 58 (cf. Verhand v. h. Bat. Gen. v. K. en Wet. (1891), peel XLVI, p. 83). See the next letter.

11, pp. 55-8: 8 January 1811 [lege 1812]. Original letter in English from the same to the same, referring to the same subjects and correcting the name Babaccang to " Panarobang . . . . situated not far from Willerie [=Wĕliri ?] about 31 or 32 pales West of Samarang" [=Sĕmarang].

12, pp. 59-71, 74: Samarang [=Sĕmarang], 19 January 1812. Original letter in English from the same to the same about some antiquities and natural curiosities (peculia). Species of trees, with medicinal properties, &c., caves, sacred fish and tortoises, a miraculous green snake which brought good luck to anyone fortunate enough to see it, and the like). Some of these things were to be seen at a village called Bacuang, not far from the Solo River and traditionally associated with the site of Modjopait [=Majapahit], others at a neighbouring place called, Rengel. Also about a Javanese MS. (alleged to have been written about 1483 A.D.) lent by the Kiay Adipattie [= Kyahi Adipati, see 5 supra], late of Damak [=Dĕmak], and forwarding 1 supra; with a further reference to the carvings of cows or oxen therein mentioned (which represented them as standing, not lying), and other matters (mainly of a personal nature). Together with a P.S. and memorandum on two persons capable of translating from the Javanese.

13, pp. 75-7: Soerakarta [=Surakarta], 12 March 1812. Original letter in Dutch from Thomas Horsfield to F. v. Winckelman[n] on the terms demanded by Mr. Winter (of Surakarta) for translating the History of Watoe-goenoeng [=Watu Gunung], and on personal matters.

14, pp. 79, 81-7: 8 March 1812. Original letter in English from F. v. Winckelmann to 001. Mackenzie with reference to (a) information obtained for the latter from the Kiay Adipatti [=Kyahi Adipati, see 5 supra], (b) his version of the History of Wattu Gunong [=Watu Gunung], otherwise called Serrat Pakem [=Serat Pakem], of which an extract (probably 7 supra), is forwarded, (c) a Javanese alphabet written by J. G. Vincent, (d) a work on Javanese characteristics by the Soesoehoenang [=Susuhunan] of Ampel, which was being translated, (e) a History of ava, (f) some works on the history of Ceylon and a description of the Wedas [=Veddas], (g) a list of rare Javanese books in an ancient script, to be transcribed by the Kyahi Adipati into modern script with a view to their translation, (h) the claims of this Javanese chief on the favour of Government, (i) Winckelmann's intended inspection of the forests, &c.

Original letter in English from the same to the same congratulating Mackenzie on his recovery from an illness, giving particulars of the Panitie Sostro [=Paniti Sastra] (which is stated to be "a kind of Dictionary of the high Javaneese or Dalem [=dalĕm, "palace"] language, used by the Emperors, the Sultauns, their families, and by all persons of high rank when conversing together or speak to persons of lower classes".; cf. Mack. 1822. 26. 2), with references also to the translation of other Javanese works and to Van Middelkoop's history of Java (8 and 16. 9 supra) and other papers, to Mackenzie's action in regard to the pensions of the widows at Sĕmarang, and personal matters.
