1, pp. 3-21 : Antiquities of Java and Bali. Comprising:- (a) pp. 7-18: On the Existence of the Hindu Religion on the Island of Bali. Copy. By John Crawfurd. This essay was printed in Asiatick Researches (1820). Vol. XIII, pp. 128 seqq., with verbal differences, some omissions, and many additions. The MS. copy omits a few passages, and abridges others where the printed version is fuller; towards the end it omits from the end of the first paragraph of p. 147 of the printed version to. the beginning of the last paragraph of p. 156 and its conclusion corresponds, though not verbatim, with p. 157. Apparently, therefore, it represents an earlier draft than the print. (b) pp. 19-20: Description of the Temple of Sookhoo [=Sukoh]. Copy. Identical with the description of this temple contained in 2. 16 supra, q.v. (c) p. 21: Contains three sketches of antiquities, all replicas of sketches in 2. 16 supra.

2, pp. 25-34: Report & Regulations of the Gunpowder Manufactory Samarang [=Sĕmarang]. (p. 27) Report & Papers on the Gun Powder of Samarang Translated from the Dutch by J: A: R: Caspersz 1812. Comprises the following :- (a) p. 27: Batavia, 15 July 1811. Letter from Governor General Janssens to Brigadier von Winckelmann forwarding an extract from a report on proposed alterations and improvements in the manufacture of gunpowder. Translated from the Dutch. (b) pp. 27-30: Buitenzorg,17 January 1810. Copy Extract of the Register of the Resolutions of His Excellency the Marshall & Governor General [=Daendels] . . . . Regulations for the Powder Mill at Samarang. 15, Articles. Translated from the Dutch. At the foot is given what purports to be a facsimile of Governor General Janssens' signature. The Dutch original is printed in Van der Chijs, Ned.-Ind. Plakaatboek, 1602-1811, (1897), 16(e) Deel, pp. 25-8. (c) pp. 31-4: Gun Powder Manufactory of Samarang. This seems to be the Extract of the Report referred to in N(o) 1 [=(a)supra]. Translated from the Original French by Lucius Rawdon Burke. 32 paragraghs. Containing technical recommendations for improvements in the manufacture of gunpowder.

3, pp. 35-54: Bali [and Lombok]. All the documents comprised under this heading appear to. be copies. They include :- (a) pp. 37-48: Soorabaya [=Surabaya], 26 June 1805. Letter from Intje Boeang [=Inche Buang] to. F: J: Rothenbuhler, Senior Merchant & Commander over the East Point of Java. Under instructions from the addressee the writer visited Bali and Lombok. He first went to. Carang-Assam [=Karang Asĕm], wh~re he had an interview with the ruling prince on political matters. He gives short descriptions of the districts subject to that State and makes mention of the Hinduism prevalent in Bali. He then proceeded to Lombok, of the different parts of which he gives brief particulars. Thence he went back to Banyoewangie [=Banyuwangi] and then visited the southern part of Bali, the various principalities of which he succinctly describes, ending with some general information about both Islands. Presumably translated from the Malay through the Dutch. Mack. Class XIV, 7 (k) contains a slightly different version of the same letter. (b) pp. 49-50: List of Bali and Lombok place names. (c) pp. 53-4: A duplicate of the same list.

4, pp. 55-69: Banyoewangie [=Banyuwangi]. Copy of an interesting memoir in English on the district, with historical, statistical, and topographical details, lists of the fauna and flora (including a list of medicinal plants), a curious account of the collection of edible birds' nests, a short notice of some local antiquities, a description of the upas and other poisons, particulars of the Government establishment maintained at Banyuwangi agriculture, trade, relations with Bali, &c. Probably translated from the Dutch.

5, pp. 71-86: Notices on Bali by Mr Knops 1812. (p.73) Some particulars on the Island of Bali. 6, pp. 87-140 ; Statistic Report on the District of Rembang in Answer to the Queries of the [18th] December 1811. Translated from the Original Dutch by Mr [F. H.] Van der Werjt [should apparently be Werff]. This title only applies to (b) infra. (a) pp. 89-92 : Rĕmbang, 21 November 1811. Copy of the first part of a letter addressed by the Resident of Rembang to Hugh Hope, Civil Commissioner of the Eastern Districts, and containing a description of Rembang and Lassem [=Lasĕm]; chiefly from the point of view of economic development and administration. It ends abruptly in the middle of paragraph 23, which deals with the Regent of Rembang and his family. (b) pp. 93-140 : Rembang, 9 July 1812. Copy. Identical with 7. 7 (b) supra,1 q.v.

7, pp. 141-8 : Cheribon [=Chiribon] – Queries of Mr L: W: Meyer to Mr M: Waterloo, respecting the troubles in the districts of Cheribon, Mr Meyer being appointed by Government to a General Settlement of the Same &c &c &c. Copy. Meyer was the Dutch Secretary to Government. The eight queries are dated Cheribon 4 March 1812, and are concerned with one Bagoos Rangien [=Bagus Rangin, or Rangga], a rebel and disturber of the peace, and the measures taken and to be taken for his suppression and the future pacification of the district. The queries appear in the margin; the text itself contains Waterloo's replies, which are fairly full, and give a good deal of historical information as to the origin of the disturbances in the district, criticizing certain proposed measures, while defending the writer himself from blame in the matter. 11, pp. 157-:-9: Geographical & Statistical Notices of Tjenkul Saivo [=Chĕngkal Sewu] a Sub-Division of the Regency of Pattie [=Pati]. Ingabey Radeen Nubbee [= Ngabehi Raden Nabi] Rokshuk Profo. April 27th 1812. Copy. Brief notes under the sub-headings: Soil, Productions, Agriculture, Division & Share of Crops, Woods, Mountains & Hills, Animals (Wild, Domestic), Food of the Natives, Births & Marriages. Evidently a translation of an account given by the above-named Javanese chief.

12, p. 161: Geographical & Statistical Notices of the District of Djapang [=Japan]. Copy. The sub-headings are (or should be): Name & Etymology; Situation; [Administration]; Sub-divisions. These are scanty notes from native sources.

13, pp. 165-6: Remarks on Timor. Under the subheadings : Wooding & Watering ; Provisions & Refreshments ; Fortifications & Landing Places ; Trade & Shipping ; Inhabitants. Copy. The author's name is given in the Table of Contents to the volume. It looks like " Cap(t) Theale."

14, pp. 167-71: Sourabaya [=Surabaya], 4 May 1812. Sketches relating to the Range of Islands connected with the East Coast of Java. By Capt William Colebrooke. Copy. A compilation of information received from persons who had visited the islands, from Timor to Bali, inclusive, (including Samao, Roti, Sawu, Flores and Sumbawa), with remarks on the different characters and types of their inhabitants, trade, whale fishery, slavery, &c.

15, p. 173: Coloured sketch of the Bay of Padjietang [=Pachitan].

16, p. 175: Plan, apparently of the Bay of Pachitan.

17, pp. 177-88: Correspondence with Marshal Daendels on the Trees recommended as most suitable for Public Avenues, Walks & Roads at Batavia 1810. The seven letters herein copied (all dated November 1810) were from G. E. Teisseire, Engelhard, G. W. C. Van Motman, Van Ysseldyk, J. M. Baljeu, Eerhardt and P. Barends. They are followed by an abstract of their several recommendations, which are very divergent, though on the whole the cedar tree seems to be best supported. Evidently translated from the Dutch.

18, pp. 189-99: Register of all the Negories [=nĕgĕri] that are mentioned in this Chart, Alphabetically arranged. Copy. The chart in question is not here appended, but p. 191 contains a note explaining its scope, which is also indicated by the subdivision of the register into Candaal [=Kĕndal] Regency, Batang Regency, Caliwoengoe [=Kali Wungu] Regency, and Negories Dependant on the Kingdom of Souracarta [=Surakarta] belonging to the Emperor. Evidently it comprised a portion of the country to the westward of Sĕmarang.

19, pp. 203-25: Description of the Bay of Sagara-Annaken [=Sĕgara Anakan] known by the name of Tjallatjap [=Chilachap] Bay & of that part of the South Coast stretching Eastward there from as far as [circa 110° 15' E. Green.] on the Island of Great Java & their Situation as founad by actual Survey & examination in the Year 1806 : with Physical Remarks & Observations &c and the Divisions of the Country also some Account of the Fabulous Opinions & of the Traditions of the Natives; of their manner of living, & means of subsistence; of the Fertility of the Southern Coasts &c &c examined as far as possible at the time. Copy. This is a detailed topographical description, translated from a Dutch memoir written by Major Cornelius (as stated in 86. I. 1 infra, a copy of the same translation). A copy of the Dutch original is in a volume of Mack. Misc.

20, p. 227: Profect Plaan van eene Drijvende Batterij op 2 Sampangs [=sampan] of Schauwen om eene Rivier te Dekken. Front and side (sectional) coloured sketch to scale of a floating battery of three guns on a raft supported by two pontoons.

21, p. 229: Copy and sketch of an epitaph beginning "AD AETERNAM MEMORIAM SORTIS INFELICIS I G M.", with sententious observations in Latin, French, Dutch and Italian.

22, pp. 233-6: Amsterdam, 25 July 1797. Memoir relative to the defence of the profect of a Circular Redoubt, with a double Enceinte proposed/ imagined for our Establishments in the East Indies by A: Johannes Major of Engineers. (b) pp. 241-50 : State of the Batteries, Fort & Intrenchment serving to the defence of the Road of Batavia. Though their paragraphs are here separately numbered, these are two parts of the same memoir, the French original being contained in Mack. 1822.15. 2, q. v.

Copy. According to this account the Tumĕnggung was of Chinese descent. He was evidently a man of exceptional ability.

The narrative printed in Verhand. v. h. Bat. Gen. der Kunsten en Wetenschappen (1814), 7(e) Deel, IX is an extract from the above (with slight modifications of phraseology, differences of spelling, and in the order of the paras., some abridgment and occasional amplification).
