- Scope & Content:
-
1, pp. 1, 5-75: Review of a Grammar of the Malayan Language with an Introduction & Praxis by William Marsden F: R: S: London Printed for the Author 1812. (p. 5), review of Mr Marsdens Malay Grammar. Copy. Printed (with some considerable verbal variations, omissions, &c.) in the Edinburgh Review (1814);. Vol. XXIII, No. XLV, pp. 151-89. This essay (which is a review of Marsden's dictionary, as well as his grammar), though by no means free from errors and in many respects superseded by more recent work, would be worth reprinting. It contains, amongst much else that is of interest, two short vocabularies of the Orang Laut and the Sĕmang which have hitherto escaped the notice of subsequent writers on the subject of the aboriginal tribes of the Malay Peninsula and are probably the earliest printed specimens of these dialects. (Some of the words of Klaproth's Sĕmang vocabulary in Journal Asiatique (1833), pp. 241-3, were clearly derived from this source.) There is also an account, and short vocabulary, of the Krama and Ngoko forms of Javanese, as well as a discussion on the origin of the Malays, Hindu influence on Javanese and Malay, and the relations between these two languages, &c. Probably the author was John Crawfurd. There are some additional notes, probably added by Mackenzie. For a criticism of the article, see Raffles 8. 19.
2, pp. 79-112: Bartholomeo's [=Bartolomeo] Voyages to the East Indies from Page 93 to Page 108. (p. 81) Chapter VII---Observations on the Navigation & Commerce of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks & Romans to the Coast of Malabar. From Fra P. Bartholomeo Voy: E. I. P. 93 to 108. Translated from Viaggo alle Indie Orientali (1796), Cap. VII., Osservazioni sopra la navigazione e il commercio degli antichi Egizj, Greci e Romani sulla costa Malabar.
3, pp. 113-60: Abridged History of Java 1813. (p. 115) A Short Sketch, of the native history of Java. Copy. By John Crawfurd. Originally numbered 84 in this Collection. The same work as 22. 3 supra, but without the notes appended to the latter. Cf. Mack. Class XIV, 7 (j).
