Title:

A Vocabulary of the English, French, Malay & Javanese Languages

Scope & Content:

(1). p. 4: A few lines of Javanese writing, comprising a fragment of an accountbook in Javanese in Javanese script.

(2) p. 5: 'Numerical Character of the Javans', from 1 to 20, in Javanese script

(3) pp. 7-65 : The Vocabulary: in English, Dutch, French, Malay, Javanese, in Roman script throughout and arranged in the alphabetical order of the English equivalents of which there are about 750. The Dutch column is only partly filled in, the others are fairly complete;

(4) pp. 66-7: 'List of Javanese Proper Names Titles, & Epithets necessary to be understood'. The short list of 14 words that follows includes the explanation of such words as dessa [=desa], krattan [=kraton], Kiai, Ade Patty, etc.

(5) p. 69: Fragment of the same accountbook appearing on p. 4.

Paper: 69 pp; pp. 4 and 69 on Javanese treebark paper (dluwang), otherwise various English papers, 'VEIC S & C Wise 1811', 'J Whatman 1809'.

Binding: modern India Office brown buckram binding.

Unfortunately in binding the volume the pages have been wrongly arranged. The true order, according to which it should be rebound, is as follows :- pp. (i), 1-12, 19, 20, 17, 18, 89-92, 85-8, 77-84, 73-76, 69-72, 61-68, 49-60, 45-8, 41-4, 97-100, 93-6, 21-40, 13-16, 101.
