Translation of portions of Pietro della Valle's Travels in India
- Scope & Content:
-
pp. 1-311: Translation of portions of Pietro della Valle's Travels in . . . . India, commencing with an introductory heading giving the contents of the text that follows, which begins abruptly with his meeting with the Queen of Olala (Letter VI, corresponding with p. 310 of the Travels in the Hakluyt Series (1892) and p. 273 of vol. iv of the French edition of 1664).
The text is divided into sections headed with brief statements of contents. The translation is quite independent of the one made by Havers and published in 1665. I suspect that it was made at second hand from a Dutch version by J. H. Glazemaker (mentioned in the Catalogus der Koloniale Bibliotheek), to which I have not had access. The translation ends with the author's finding a lodging at Bassora, corresponding with p. 439 (vol. iv) of the French edition. See also Mack. General Collection LXXI and LXXII.
