Hand(s)

Samaritan majuscule script of the 14th century. Scribes: Gen. 1:1-Lev. 23:44 was written by Ithamar ben Aaron ben Ithamar, High Priest in Damascus, and Joseph ben Abi Ozzi; from Lev. 24 until the end of the manuscript it was written by Abraham ben Ab Nessan ben Abi Saʿadia ben Ab Hasda of Gerar (i.e. Gaza).

Note on f. 256v: 'Cons. fol. 254 - fol. 96 + double - fol. 115 omitted'.

F. 1v: a modern Hebrew transliteration of the colophon information on f. 208r, accompanied with some notes in English.

Provenance and Acquisition

Two deeds of sale at the end of Genesis (f. 66v); deed of sale at the end of Exodus (f. 122r).

This is one the six manuscripts acquired by Archbishop James Ussher (1581-1656). He then gave them as a gift to Sir Robert Cotton in 1629.

Latin inscription by James Ussher (?) on f. 3r: “PENTATEUCHUM SAMARITANUM, A decem Tribuum reliquiis, post regni Israelitici excidium, primo acceptum, et DOSITHEO Samaritarum Pseudopropheta, temporibus Apostolorum, postea, interpolatum; ab Ecclesiasticis Scriptoribus (Eusebio, Diodoro, Hieronymo, Cyrillo, Procopio, Anespero, Georgio Chronographo) identidem citatum; atque a Cuthaeis hodiernis demum redemptum: BIBLIOTHECAE COTTONIANAE (quae amicissimi Domini summa humanitate semper mihi patuit) L.M.D. Jacobus Usserius Armachanus Hiberniae primas. Ex Librarii notatione ad calcem Geneseos colligimus, exemplar hoc sexcentis siclis (h. e. libris Anglicanis 75) emptum fuisse, mense Rabie, anni 792. regni Ismaelis, circa Martium, viz. mensem anni aerae nostra Christianae 1390." Ja. Armachanus.
