pp. [i-iv]. Table of Contents.
, pp 1-41 (32 x 19.5 cm.). Doctor [James] Wilson's narrative of the War of Coromandel from December 1750 to December 1753. Original. Copied in V. 1. There is a certain resemblance in the handwriting of this and of 14. 25. above; possibly therefore this is by the younger Doctor Wilson. In 45, p. 7, Orme says that it was "composed by Dr. Wilson, who resided some time as Doctor to the mother of Mahomed Ally at Tritchanopoly. "The writer very seldom mentions any names, but carefully notes the exact dates of every event, which, with the inclusion of some details not mentioned by Orme but corroborated by naytive historians, e.g. the Mysore possession of Madura in 1752 (see p. 33), makes the paper a valuable one in spite of some eccentricities of style. As an instance of the latter, the writer thus describes the ending of the French attempt to carry Trichinopoly by escalade: "They got close to the outer wall unperceived under one of our Batteries, mounted it, turned our own guns on us, applyed their ladders to the inner wall. Several mounted them and two or three got in. Tritchinopoly shook to the foundation. Providence, and a brisk fire preserved it until daylight when the enemy called out for quarter."
, pp. 45-47 (31.5 x 19.5 cm.). Description of Tritchinopoly by Dr. Wilson. Original. Copied in V. 2.
, pp. 49-50 (31.5 x 19.5 cm.). Description of Seringham by Dr. Wilson. Original. Copied in India, V. 3. The description applies only to the Pagoda, and not to the Island of the same name in which it is situated.
, pp. 53-72 (38 x 24.5 cm.). An aocount of the Proceedings of Messrs. Stringer Lawrence, Alexander Wynch, and Foss Westcott, the Commissaries on the part of His Britannick Majesty and of the Honble. the United East India Company, for the restitution of Madrass, began at Pondicherry, July the 30th 1749 O.S. Apparantly an official duplicate, part of it being written by Mr. Peter St. Paul, Secretary to the Commissaries. The letters in these Proceedings are of earlier date than those given in XI. .2. They are as follows :- (1) From the Commissaries to the Court of Directors, 30 July 1749; to Admiral Boscawen, 31 July, 10 and 29 August 1749; to Governor Charles Floyer, 10 August and 8 September 1749; to M. Dupleix and the Council at Pondicherry, 25 August and 21 September 1749. (2) From Admiral Edward Boscawen to the English Commissaries, 1 and 15 August 1749. (3) From M. Dupleix and the Council at Pondicherry to the English Commissaries, 9 September 1749; to Admiral Boscawen, 10 October 1749. (4) From Governor Charles Floyer to the English Commissaries, 1 August and 13 August 1749. To these letters are added :- (5) "Treaty of the Evacuation of the town of Madrass" (p. 57) and (6) Protest against the condition of Madras when delivered over by the French (p. 67).
, pp. 75-90 (31.7 x 20.5 cm.). Journal de ce qui s'est passé depuis la mort de Naserdjang, et pendant le séjour du seigneur Mozajerdjang dans la ville de Pondichery depuis le 16 decembre 1750 a 15 janvier 1751. Either an Original or a copy made by a Frenchman. Copied in II. 1. Narrates the elevation of Muzaffar Jang to be Nizam or Subadar of the Deccan after the death of his uncle, Nasir Jang; his reception as such by Dupleix at Pondicherry ; the dissatisfaction of the Pathan noble who had brought about the death of Nasir Jang; how Dupleix quieted them; Muzaffar Jang's gift of all the Coast from the River Kistna to Cape Comorin to Dupleix; appointment of Chanda Sahib as Nawab of the Carnatic under Dupleix, and Muzaffar Jang's departure to the Deccan with a French escort after making great gifts to the Army, the Church, and the Poor.
, pp. 93-304 (20.5 x 16 cm.). Extract of Captain Dalton’s Journal of the War of Coromandel from the encampment at the streights of Utatoor, July 13th 1751 until November 14th 1753, when Dalton quitted Trichinopoly. Original. Copied in III. 1. This paper was copied by Dalton himself from a narrative which he composed on his voyage home. The Original MS. is still in the possession of Captain Dalton's family, and some extracts are given in Mr. Charles Dalton's Memoir of Captain Dalton, which show that the present paper commences at the 31st or 32nd folio of the Original. Unfortunately I have not been ab1e to obtain permission to see the Original. On p. 135 is a letter to Clive, dated Sleningford, 13 December 1762, in which Dalton says, in forwarding the first portion: "I shall be very happy if from such materials Mr. Orme can extract anything that may be of use to his undertaking." The paper concludes with a letter, undated, to Orme, p. 302: "This concludes my narrative as far as relates to Trichinopoly affairs, and I am very happy that it has proved of any service to you" ; which shows that the Original narrative extends beyond Dalton ~8 departure from Trichinopoly. Orme remarks (46, p. 6) : "No communication h3.S been of so much use to me as this." In 222. 149, Orme says that Dalton was the only person mentioned in his History who was satisfied with Orme's treatment of his exploits.
, pp. 305-362 (20.5 x 16 cm.). Letters from Captain Dalton with explanations of his narrative written to me in London, November 1762 to February 1st 1764. Originals. (1) pp. 305-307. Letter from Dalton to Clive, 25 November 1762, saying that he had written an account of his services In India, which he would gladly copy for the use of Mr. Orme. Copied in III. 3. (2) pp, 309-313. All of these refer to Dalton's Narrative, see No. 6 above, some of them giving additional information. (4) pp.351-353. Letter to Orme dated 30/7/63. An extract from this is copied in III. 53. Dalton says that when the French had failed in their attempted surprise of Trichinopoly (27 Nov. 1753), everyone of the assailants would have been killed by the English Sepoys but for the humanity of Lieut. Harrison, who with great difficulty restrained his men. (5) pp. 355-357. Letter to Orme dated 1/10/63. Copied in. III. 60. Thanking Orme for a copy of the 1st volume of his History. (6) pp. 359-362.
