2, pp. 5-37 (23 x 19 cm.). Letters from J. Z. Holwell. Originals or duplicates. (1) pp. 5-8. Letter, dated Calcutta, 4 January 1759, to John Payne. Says that the Dutch if successful had intended to massacre all the English in Bengal; is indignant at the action of the Directors. (2) pp. 9-12. Extract from letter, dated Calcutta, 10 September 1759, to Admiral Pocock. Apologises for his interference in the matter of Captain Glover, of the Warren, having come from Point de Galle to Bengal instead of going to Madras. (3) pp. 13-16. Letter, dated Calcutta, 11 June 1759, to Charles Manningham. Copy. Printed in Holwell's Important facts regarding the E.I. Company's Affairs in Bengal from 1752 to 1760, p. 255. (Holwell's India Tracts.) Discusses the leasing of the Company's lands to individuals. (4) pp. 17-20. Letter to John Payne. Copy, initialled by Holwell. Refers to his enemies in the Court of Directors, the Court's prohibition of the borrowing of money in Bengal, and the Nawab's donation to the army. (5) pp. 21-37. Letter, dated Calcutta, 27 October 1759, to John Payne. Copy, initialled by Holwell. A general letter dealing with the affairs of Bengal since the previous July. Holwell suggests that part of the very heavy military expenses might be saved by the Company sending out in each of its ships four or five families of "farmers, laborers, or handicrafts" as colonists, from whom might be raised "a standing militia."
3, pp. 41-56 (30.5 x 23.5 cm.). Account of the Dutch expedition from Batavia to Bengal from its origin with the Nabob in October 1758 to its conclusion January 1760. By Mr. Holwell. At the end Holwell notes as follows: "The foregoing sheets are copys of my private letter to my friend Davis. Some parts of this Dutch narrative are struck out and the rest adopted by the Board and sent in the Royal George's Paquet to the Court of Directors under the Title of A Memorial of Facts. Since closing the foregoing narrative the Dutch have been guilty of a breach of every article they signed and sealed with the Nabob. Cossim Aly Khan, the Suba's son-in-law, is now advancing against them at the head of three thousand troops- for further particulars I must refer you to Lord Clive who leaves us Tuesday morning and your gratefull and affect. Holwell in the Government of Bengall. Saturday the 2nd February 1760. A copy of the Memorial of Facts alluded to will be found in the India Office Records, Home Miscellaneous No. 95; parts of it have been printed in Forde's Clive's Right Hand Man, pp. 122-132,138-140. A retranslation of the Dutch translation of the same is printed in An authentic Account of the Proceedings of their High Mightinesses the States of holland, &c., 1762.
4, pp. 57-59 (37.7 x 23.5 cm.). Letter, dated Calcutta 23 January 1760, from Robert Clive to J. Z. Holwell, Esq. and Council Fort William. Copy. Protests against the tone of the letters from the Court of Directors and resigns the Presidentship.
5, pp. 61-63 (32.5 x 20 cm.). Letter, dated 28 January 1760, from the Council Fort William to Robert Clive. Original. Acknowledge his letter of 23 January, and express their appreciation of his conduct during his governorship. In the Contents Orme notes, "This letter must be returned to Lord Clive, as it is the Original, and through oversight bound up with the other papers."
6, pp. 65-67 (37 x 22.5 .cm.). Three Letters from Major Carnac to the Nabob Shuja ad Dowla. Copies. Dated 27 April, 14 May, and 18 May 1761. Announce the completion of an alliance between the English and the Shahzada and the speedy arrival of Col. Coote (Nazier Jung Bahadre) the conqueror of Pondicherry. Dr. Denison Ross in his Calendar of Persian Correspondence, 1759-1767, p. 467, says that Eyre Coote received two titles from the Great Mughal, viz., Saif Jang (the Sword in War) and Nasir Jang (the Succourer in War).
7, p. 69 (37 x 22.5 cm.). Two letters from the Nabob Shuja ad Dowla Bahadre to Saubut Jung. Copies. Received 9 and 14 May 1761. Sabit Jung was the native title by which Clive was usually referred to (see 288. 2, and Malcolm's Life of Robert Lord Clive, I. 209, n., and 400, n.), but according to the Contents the title is here given by Shuja-ud-daula to Carnac, whereas, according to Dr. Denison Ross, Carnac's Indian titles were Mahamu-d-daulah Basalat Jang and Mansuru-l-mulk Ruknu-d-daulah Bahadur Jang, those of Clive being: (1) Saif Jang; (2) Sabit Jang. and (3) Amiru-l- mamalik, to which, according to Scrafton (Reflections, p. 106), We should add “Zubdut Ulmulk Nusseera Dowla."
8, p. 70 (37 x 22.5 cm.). Letter from the Nabob Shuja ad Dowla Bahadre to Major Carnac. Copy. Received 15 May 1761.
9 (1), pp. 73-88 (38.8 x 24 cm.). Translation of News from the Capital Shah Jhanabad, dated the 5th of Rebia al Awal 1175, answering to the 6th of October 1761. Copy or duplicate. Copied in IX. 14, X. 2. In 46, p. 135, this paper is stated to have been "written by an intelligencer [at Delhi] to Colonel Coote." This and the following paper are general letters giving all the political events of importance in "Indostan Proper." (2) pp. 89-105 (38.8 x 24 cm.). Translation of News from the Capital Shahjehanabad untill the 24th of Zechijjah in the year of the Hegira 1175 answering to the 17th of July 1762.

Journal of the troubles of Bengal, the taking of Patna by Ellis, the re-taking of it - the taking of all the troops by the River Duah [or Duva] the massacre of Amyatt's party and all the prisoners, written by Mr. Fullerton, surgeon at Patna, who was made prisoner and the only man spared. From June 17 to October 25 1763. Copy. Re-copied in XIII. 4. Fullerton's, Campbell's, and Anderson's Journals are all printed in J. Talboys Wheeler's M emorandum on the Records of the Foreign Department, 1865, and in Firminger's Diaries of Three Surgeons.
13, pp. 129-130 (31 x 20 cm.). List of the sufferers during the troubles from June to October 1763, being the slain in fight, those who dyed on service of illness, those who were massacred. Copy. This, though not re-copied into the India volumes, is by far the most, detailed List in regard to the Company's civil servants. (A note at the end says it is deficient as to the other victims, i.e., military, free merchants, &c.).

22, p. 172 (38.5 x 23 cm.). Extract of news from Madrass relative to the Expedition against Usoff Caun, dated the 18th October 1763. Copy. States that the siege of Madura has, so far, been unsuccessful, but must be continued to the bitter end "if we hope to have any peace in those parts." This extract is an almost verbatim copy of part of Byfeld's letter to R. Smith dated Bombay 6 Dec. 1763, see 72. 33 below.
23, pp. 173-176 (23.6x18 cm.). Letter, dated Chitpur, 26th December 1763, from Major Carnac to Richard Smith. Original. Says that he has lost all his best friends in the Patna Massacre, that he is about to take command of the main army in Bengal. Apparently Carnac was godfather to the son of Richard Smith.
24, pp. 177-178 (30x17.5 cm.). Letter, dated Calcutta, 26th December 1763, from E. Stephenson to Richard Smith. Original. Says that the massacre at Patna is a proof that the native princes look upon the English "in the character of usurpers."
25, pp. 181-193 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Letter, dated Islamabad, February 3rd 1764, from Thomas Rumbold to Richard Smith. original. Describes the attempt of Kasim Ali to make himself lndependent of the English; how he had been suffered to raise "one of the finest armies that has perhaps ever appeared in the East," and ascribes his failure to his personal cowardice: "Had he been as good a general as he was a consummate politician, we should have had by this time little reason to boast of our sway in this country." "Poor Major Adams returned to Calcutta, with a fine fortune and deserved glory, but a bad state of health. He took his passage for Europe but died suddenly, regretted by everybody." Gives some details of the Patna massacre and the recovery of Dacca by Captain Grant.
26, pp. 197-206 (32 x 20 cm.). Letter, dated Berkley Square, 27 April 1764, from Clive to the Court of Directors, 1764. Copy. Accepts their offer to return to Bengal as Governor, reviews Vansittart's policy in reference to Jafar Ali and Kasim Ali and outlines his own policy tor the restoration of Bengal; acknowledges his own mistake in recornmending Vansittart as Governor of Bengal. This letter has been printed in 'Malcolm's Life of Robert Lord Clive, II., p. 302.
27, pp. 209-233 (32 x 20 cm.). Fort William Consultations, dated 31 January 1765. Copy. Re-copied in XVII. 1. Translations from Persian enclosures to a letter dated 27 December 1764 from Colonel Carnac. These enclosures are letters written by the Nawab Kasim Ali to his officers during the troubles at Patna, including two letters in which he orders the English prisoners to be put to death .
