2, pp. 5-6 (23.5 x 18.5 cm.). Letter, dated Fort St. George, 9 April 1762, from Sunca Ramma to Robert Orme. Appa rently the Original letter written for Sunca Ramma by a native who could write English. The signature, in English characters, is apparently that of Sunca Ramma, so this and other letters from the same person may be considered Originals. Congratulates Orme on his arrival, and promises to send him some articles.

Forgetfulness of the Council In regard to the meritorious services of Muhammad Yusuf, against whom they have sent an army, "by the purswation of the Nabob"; report that Mr. Pigot received a present of £40,000 from the Nawab before his departure. Some extracts from this letter have been printed in Colonel H. D. Love's Vestiges of Old Madras, II. 567.

Says that he has sent a number of military journals, plans, &c., to Lord Clive, which he presumes are for the “prosecution of your History, which is a work of such merit, and so universally applauded, that I am taking all the pains I can to procure more materials, and shall be extremely happy if anything I can write, collect, or design should prove of the least utility to your laborious undertaking."

Necessary but not honourable peace with Haidar Ali: "The reason it seems so disgracefull is that it was begun with ideas of Conquest on our part, and it is said this is the first time a Country enemy has gained an advantage over us." Du Pré ascribes the failure of the war to want of cavalry to deal with enemies whose business was not "to fight but to plunder, burn and destroy"; considers General Joseph Smith a man of good heart and much sense, but lacking in the firmness required to govern Yahoos, "Men, my friend (9 out of 10), are Yahoos." Some extracts from this letter have been printed in Colonel H. D. Love's Vestiges of Old Madras.

Regrets that he is unable to assist Captain Seeley, whom Orme has recommended to his notice, as that officer has been sent to Bombay, "for if I had not been under obligations to you or the friendship you showed my brother [? William Lindsay, see 19. 12], yet every man that is worth knowing would be flattered in having an opportunity of obliging Mr. Orme, and at the same time that I humbly join in the general applause of your inestimable performance I hope I have benefited by your very judicious remarks." Critical situation . In the south of India, Haidar Ali and the Marathas both applying to the English for assistance, "but I have strongly recommended Pacifick measures to the gentlemen here, for the Company are by no means in a situation for War, and am sorry to add that our having been foiled both in the Field and the Cabinet has lowered our reputation so much that the Country Powers seem to have forgot the Respect they held us in formerly." Thinks that the Council have made a mistake in not accepting.his co-operation as Royal Plenipotentiary, but is on the most friendly terms personally with Mr. Du Pré.

'Tis impossible for a Government to be more distressed 0 -every man's hand is against us, threatened by foreign and domestic enemys, and the Company at home in such a humor that we are almost certain to be blamed do what we will" Printed in Colonel H.
