- Scope & Content:
-
pp. [i-iv]. Table of Contents.
1, pp. 1-2 (32 x 20 cm.). Account of the Kings of Tritchinopoly from 1509 to 1732. Apparently a copy. Duplicate of 19. Re-copied in 1. 22.
2, pp. 5-6 (17.5x 11 cm.). Letter, dated 23 April1752, from Daniel Murray to the Chevalier [Jacques François] Law. In French. Captain-Lieutenant Murray deserted from the English in 1751 and was given a commission by the French. See Wilson, Madras Army, I., pp. 34-35 .
3, pp. 7-13 (31 x 20 cm.). Letter, dated Au Camp Français sur la Rive droite de Rajamendri, 15 Oct. 1758, from the Marquis de Conflans. Original. In French . Orme says that it is uncertain as to whom the letter was addressed, but on the first page appears at the bottom •: "M. P. Le Maréchal de Belle-ille," who was doubtless Charles Louis Auguste Fouquet, Duc de Belle-isle, the great French commander, who died in 1761. Orme details the contents of this letter in his Index. Its chief interest lies in the fact that it gives an account of Conflans himself, and Orme concludes: "This is a very frothy letter, but not sufficiently silly to give any idea how weak a man Conflans proved when obliged to act."
4, p. 15 (20 x 15 cm.). Letter, dated Paris, 30 July 1765, from M. de Bussy to Orme. Original. Promises to search for materials likely to be useful for the second volume of his History. This letter appears to be in reply to a letter from Orme dated 6 June 1765. See XV. 6.
5, pp.19-20(20 x 15.5 cm.). Letter, dated Paris, 24 May 1765, from M. de Bussy to Orme. Original. Says that he has lost all his papers. He begins in the following complimentary style: "Je vois par la lecture de votre histoire des guerres des Indes que vous n'avez nul besoin de renseignemens, car vous traitez les événemens en homme très instruit et tres impartial, qui sont les deux qualités essentielles d'un historien."
6, pp. 24-26 (24.5 x 18.5 cm.). Queries from myself [Orme] to Colonel Calliaud, June 12th (thereabouts) 1763. Original. "From your eternal querist and friend." The first query begins: "At the time that Grenville's party was cutt off, your narrative says that the provisions came to camp only from the country of Tanjore." In the version of Lawrence's Journal which is (see 13. 1 (2) n. and V. 4) ascribed to Caillaud, and in Cambridge's Account of the War on the Coast of Coromandel, p. 63, the expression used is "our provisions coming mostly from Tanjore." I do not know of any other Narrative by Caillaud. Caillaud's replies to Orme's queries are not given.
7, pp. 27-28 (23 x 18.5 cm.). Letter, dated Beverley, 19th July 1763, from Marmaduke Best to Orme. Original. Reply to Orme's letter of the 28rd June 1763 (III. 22), saying he knows nothing for certain regarding the story of "Pikerow."
8, pp. 31-33 (23.5 x 18.5 cm,). Letter, dated Bilton Park, 27th June 1763, from Alexander Wynch to Orme. Original. Sends him copies of his Journals, &c., in reference to the siege of Fort St. David in 1758. (See 20. 10.)
9, pp. 35-61 (23.5 x 18 cm.). Extracts from Maissin's Memoire, and Caillaud's Letters to the Presidency in the time between 1752 and 1758 under 29 heads, which are Routes, Places, Climate, H arvest, Rivers - these heads are alphabetically arranged at the end of the extracts on pages 60-61. In Orme's handwriting.
10, pp. 63-66 (33 x 20 cm.). List of the places in Colonel Heron's March to Tinivelly, 1755, accordingly as they were come upon with the latitudes since adjusted by my [Orme's] order to a man who could do it. Copy. This has been made use of in Orme's "Map of the Coast of Coromandel from the River Gadevari to Cape Comorin." (See History of Indostan, p. 33.)
11, pp. 67-76. Letters to Orme from John Caillaud. Originals :- (1) pp. 67-68 (22.8 x 18.5 cm.). Letter, dated Aston House, May the 30th [1774]. Original. Compliments him on his historical work and promises all assistance. (2) pp. 71-73 (18 x 14 cm.). Letter, dated George Street, Monday [June 1774]. Original. Sends an account of the Trichinopoly Districts, with particulars about the Polygar hostages. (3) pp. 75-76 (22.8 x 18 cm.). Letter, dated Aston House, Sept. 13th [1774]. Original. Complimentary remarks about his History. N.B. Orme for some reason or other always, even in his History, writes - "Calliaud," though the above letters show that the spelling adopted by the Colonel was "Caillaud."

In Orme's handwriting. (See above, 2.1.) This and the following paper show the care with which Orme treated even very unlikely material.

22, pp. 163-169 (30 x 18.5 cm.). Letter, dated Trichinopoly, March 1758, from Calliaud. Copy. Endorsed as "part of a letter to Captain Pechell. In the letter Caillaud refers to himself as "pauvre Ponce," which is explained in a marginal note as “a nickname he went by in our family," so that the copy would appear to have been made by one of his relatives. This letter, not quite accurate in details, gives an account of all Caillud's "operations and transactions concerning Madura and Tinivelly from Apri11755 to March 1758."
