, pp. 21-23 (23 x 18 cm.). Short and imperfect extracts made by me [i.e., Orme] concerning Joseph Smith from December 20th 1766 to April 7th 1768. Original.

, pp. 63-103 (23.8 x 18 cm.). Extracts made by R. O.from various letters, especially from those of Brigadier General Joseph Smith concerning the military operations, together with insertions of facts to those before extracted, containing the events from September 1766 to October 12th 1770. Original. This is another good instance of Orme's preparation of his historical material, and is proof that he intended to continue his History through the campaign with Haidar Ali.
, pp. 107-108 (23 x 18 cm.). Letter, dated Hill Street, 5 May 1774, from Governor [Charles] Bourchier Junior to Orrme. Maps. Original. Sends him six military charts to be returned later.

An Account of the Revenues which Hyder Ally received in 1767 from the different parts of his Dominions into his Treasury, clear of all charges of collecting. Copy. Haidar's income - is here stated at 145 lakhs of rupees. (2) pp. 112-113. Income' of the countries taken from Hyder by the Morattoes and the Nabob. Amounting to 22 lakhs, 85 thousand rupees. An account of Hyder Ally's expenses yearly. Copy. This is interesting, as showing the amounts paid by a native prince as the pay of a soldier at this date :- A horseman riding his own horse received Rs 40 per month; a horseman mounted by Haidar Ali, a sepoy, a horsekeeper, an artificer received Rs 10 per month, and a peon Rs 5.
, (1), p. 123 (31.5 x 19 cm.). Paragraph 11 of the Company's letter to the Commissioners, dated 23rd March 1770, with approbation of General J. Smith. Copy. (2) pp. 127-138 (31.5 x 19.5 cm.). Extracts of the Company's letter to Fort St. George, dated 23rd M arch 1770, paragraphs 10 [should be 8] to 13, blaming strongly the conduct of the Governor and Council in the whole of the war with Hyder Ally. Copy. (3) pp. 139-148 (31.5 x 19.5 cm.). Extract of the Company's letter to the Commissioners, dated M arch 23rd 1770, paragraphs 10 to 17 and 43. Says that it is the Company's servants and not the Nawab who have caused the war with Haidar Ali; praises Joseph Smith; enumerates the causes of our disgraces; says that the powers given to the field deputies are absurd and that Major Call was to blame for the loss of the fort of Mulbagal. The Commissioners referred to in the heading were Messrs. Forde, Scrafton and Vansittart, who never arrived in India. See 39. 11 below. (4) p. 151 (31.5 x 19 cm.). Extract of the general letter to Fort St. George, dated 22nd March 1771. Copy. Approving Gen. Joseph Smith's conduct and blaming that of the Governor and Council in reference to Col. Wood's trial.
, (1), pp. 155-166• (31.5 x 19 cm.). Extract of the Diary and Proceedings of the Select Committee at Fort St. George, 11th Feb. 1771. Copy. Concerning the state of affairs and quarrel between the Nawab and the King of Tanjore. (2) pp. 166-176 (31.5 x 19 .cm.). Extract from the Fort St. George Consultations, 3 April I771. Copy. "Concerning the origin and state of the Maravars from 1500, and further back to the date of 1771." According to Mr. Du Pre's letter (see No. 13 below), this is stated to be a report by one "Moodu Kistnah." Madhu Krishna was the Company's Dubash.
, pp. 179-205 (37.5 x 24 cm.}. Correspondence between the Council Fort St. George and General Joseph Smith. Copies. (1) pp. 179-180. Letter, dated Camp before Tanjore, 29 Oct. 1771, from General Joseph Smith to the Governor & Council. Copy. Gives an account of the siege. The letter should be dated 27th and not 29th October. (5) pp. 199-200. Letter, dated Fort St. George, 1 Nov. 1771, from the Council, Madras, to B. G. Smith. Copy. Regret that terms have been granted to the King of Tanjore, when the town might have been stormed, but confess that Smith has acted in accordance with his instructions. (6) pp. 203-205. Letter, dated Camp near Tanjore 6 Nov. 1771, from B.-General Joseph Smith to the Council Madras. Copy. Says that the failure to carry the war to the bitter end is due to the Council not having settled with the Nawab to that effect before the attack began. The correspondence shows that the Council, whilst instructing Smith to obey the orders of the Nawab, expected him to make the Nawab do exactly as the Council wished him to do. Smith, on the other hand, followed his orders literally.
, pp. 207-209 (22.5 x 17.5 cm.). Letter, dated Betchworth, 19 June 1774, from Mr. Josias Du Pré to Orme. Original. Replies to certain questions regarding the rights of Tanjore over the "Maraver," and of the Nawab over Tanjore.

, pp. 215-216 (31 x 19 cm.). Part of the instructions of the Governor and Council to B. G. Joseph Smith on the expedetion against Tanjore, dated 14th April and 18th May 1772 . Copy.
, pp. 219-221 (31 x 19 cm.). Extract from a letter dated 8 June 1772, from B. General Joseph Smith to Council. Copy. Entered on Consultations of the 15th June. Gives an account of the capture of Ramanadpuram, but the letter is hardly intelligible, and appears to refer partly to Ramanadpuram (see No. 17 (2) below), and partly to Killacoil (see No. 18 (2) below).
, (1), pp. 223-227 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Extract from a letter dated 5 June 1772, from General Smith to the Council. Copy . Gives an account of the taking of Ramanadpuram. (2) pp. 231-233 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Extract from a letter, dated 8 June 1772, from General Smith to the Council. Copy. About the taking of Ramanadpuram.
, (1), pp. 235-6 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Letter, dated 18 June 1772, from General Smith to the Council Madras. Copy. The march to Killacoil [i.e., Kaleiyarkovil] 15 miles from Sivaganga. In 333. 32 below there is a plan of Carracoil, stormed by Lieut.-Colonel Bonjour, 25 June 1772, evidently the same place. (2) pp. 239-247 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Letter dated 29 June 1772, from General Smith to the Council Madras. Copy. The taking of Killacoil. (3) p. 251 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Extract from a Letter, dated 15 July 1772, from the Council, Madras, to General Smith. Copy. Regarding the plunder taken at Killacoil. (4) pp. 255-263 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Minutes of the Board with letters under consideration, concerning the Prize Money of Killacoil. Copy. The letters refers to a quarrel, the subject of which is not stated, between William Duffin and Capt. Richard Mathews, but the Minutes refer almost entirely to the manner in which the Council's dealing with General Smith's offer of resignation has been misrepresented to the public. (5) pp. 267-290 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Letter, dated 17 Aug. 1772, from General Smith to the Council Madras. Copy. With copies of correspondence between the officers of Colonel Bonjour's detachment on the one hand, and Colonel Bonjour, the Nawab, and William Duffin on the other, regarding the division of plunder taken at Killacoil. This letter is interesting as indicative of General Smith's relations with his officers - too kindly for good discipline.
, pp. 291-316 (31.3 x 19 cm.). Correspondence regarding General Joseph Smith's offer of resignation and his resumption of the command of the army, Aug. 24th 1772 - Jan. 1773. Copies.

, pp. 325-331 (39 x 25 cm.). A General Account of the Kingdom of Tanjour, showing the names of Provinces and Districts, as well as the number of Villages, extent of Land bearing produce, Quantity of Produces, Land Tax, Customs, &c., of the whole Revenues per annum. Copy. Duplicate of 62. 24. Copied in XIII. 65.
, p. 333 (29.5 x 19 cm.). News of the Morattoes from Seerpee. Copy, dated Sirpie, 7th March 1774.
, p. 337 (20 x 12 cm.). Character of Vendome by Voljaire, applicable to Brigadier-General Smith, drawn up by myself [Orme]. In Orme's handwriting.
, p. 339 (23 x 18.5 cm.). Thanks of the General Court to Brigadier-General Joseph Smith, drawn up by myself [Orme]. In Orme's handwriting.
(1), pp. 341-348 (23 x 18.5 cm.). Two letters, signed respectively "An Enemy to Calumny" and" A Detester of Calumny" to [Gen. Richard Smith]. Possibly Original. Advice as to what steps should be taken to defend General Joseph Smith in the event of an attack being made upon his conduct when in command of the army in the Maravan and Tanjore expedition. The dates are apparently some time in April 1774. (2) pp. 349-353 (23.5 x 18.5 cm.); Account, of what happened in the General Court of Directors [April 1774]. In different handwritings. Attack on and defence of the conduct of General Joseph Smith. Stated in the Table of Contents to be by General Richard Smith. (3) pp. 357-358 (30.5 x18.5 cm.). Another account of the same by General Richard Smith. This sums up Sir Robert Fletcher's malignant relation at the India House of the capture of Kaleiyarkovil. The date of this paper is given in the Table of Contents as May 1774. The true account of the massacre at this place is given in William Fullarton's View of the English Interests in India. 2nd Edition, 1788. Preface, pages xiii-xvii; See also 60. 4.
