"I return with a fortune equal to my moderate wishes and obtained in a manner that will make me enjoy it with pleasure, pleasure unmingled with the least bitter Reflection." Whatever General Richard Smith's disinterestedness and ability may have been, his comparatively humble birth combined with the fortune which he acquired in the East exposed him to very violent attacks. See the satirical pamphlet entitled A Vindication of General Richard Smith, London, 1783.
24, pp. 217-222 (32 x 20 cm.). Minute by Richard Smith on the Fortifications of Calcutta. Copy. Strongly urges the necessity of a proper fortification of the town as a necessary precaution against the French, and points out, that had Lally been successful in his attempt on Madras, the French would have been in the position now occupied by the English in India; asks that for these and other reasons the matter may be considered at a very early date.
25, pp. 225-227 (32 x 20 cm.). Explanatory Note to the treaty with Sujah-ud-dowlah. Copy. To the effect that the present treaty is concluded on the 29 Nov. 1768 to put an end to rumours which have arisen of disagreement between the Company and the Nawab Shuja-ud-daula. The old treaty with Clive is renewed, but the number of troops to be entertained by the Nawab limited to 35,000, in return for which the Company promises that, so long as the Nawab and his successors observe the Treaty, the Company will make no fresh demands.
26, pp. 229-238 (32 x 20 cm.). Letter, dated Head Quarters Allahabad, 20 Dec. 1769, from Richard Smith to Mr. Scrafton. Copy. Is glad of Governor Verelst's departure :- "I only fear for the mild disposition of his successor: a Governor of Bengal should always know how to give a Negative." Smith refers to John Cartier (26 Dec. 1769- 13 April 1772), who is described by the Author of the Vindication of General Richard Smith in his Saddle put on the right horse, p. 40, as "that best of all Christians, Governor John Cartier."
