pp. [i-ii]. Table of Contents.
, pp. 1-12. A Journal of the most remarkable Occurences in an Expedition from Madras to attack Karickal. Copy. In the Table of Contents Orme says that this is the Journal of John Call, Chief Engineer, who allowed him to take a copy. Call says of this affair (N.B. The town surrendered the 3rd April 1760) :- “Thus terminated the siege of Karikal, which was attacked and taken even before the Stores arrived which were destined to take it; but had the enemy made a defence equal to the strength of the place or the numbers in Garrison, it would have cost us many lives and a much longer time. Col. Malleson (History of the French in India, p. 570 (n)) says that the Governor of Karical was Pierre Renault, who had already had the misfortune o'f being forced to surrender Chandernagore to Watson and Clive in 1757; but M. A. Martineau, Governor of French India (1914) writes me that this is a mistake, the Commandant (whose name is not mentioned by Orme) having been a M. d'Héry.
, pp. 13-48. A Narrative of the operations during the Blockade and Siege of Pondicherry from Sept. 10th 1760 to Jan. 15th 1761. In the Table of Contents Orme says that this is the Journal kept by John Call, who permitted him to take a copy.
, pp. 49-161. Letters from Col. Donald Campbell to the Governor and Council, from 24th Feb. to 18th Aug. 1767 and 6th June to 14th July 1768. Copies. Duplicates of 49. 2 above, and 77. 2,3 below.
, pp. 163-178. Letter dated Pondamallee, 27 Aug. 1775, from Lieut.-Colonel Bonjour to the Governor and Council of Fort St. George. Copy. Givesa the true account of the capture of "Callacoil," the chief town of the Little Marava, the incidents of which had been much misrepresented in England. See 33. 26 (3) above.
, pp. 170-182. Letter dated Glensaddel, the 1st Dec. 1777, from [Col. Donald Campbell] to Robert Orme. Copied from 72. 15 below. Describes Vashenelloor (i.e., Vasudevanallur) and other Poligar forts.
