Letter, dated Powick, near Worcester, 2 Sept. 1776 from Captain Stephen Smith to Orme, with replies to Ormes queries regarding Draper’s sally [14 Dec. 1758], when Madras was besieged by Lally. Original. Printed in Colonel H. D. Love's Vestiges of Old Madras, II. 555. Captain Smith says that he was at this time a Lieutenant in the Grenadiers, and that it was his men who were mistaken by Count d'Estaign for Lally's Regiment, that the Count when he discovered his mistake tried to escape, but his horse fell and he would have been killed if Smith had not interfered and sent him under escort to Colonel Draper. If correct, this disposes of the sensational story that d'Estaign was captured by his own countrymen who had deserted to the English.
8, pp. 71-74 (23 x 18.5 cm.) Major, Pascall’s account of Draper's sally, taken from him, Oct. 6th 1776. In Orme's handwriting, having been taken down by Orme during a visit paid him by Major Pascall, who was in the sally and brought up the rear. Mentions a surgeon named Sprat as attending him when he was carried into the town. He also mentions seeing the results of a desperate hand to hand fight in a small room between English and French soldiers. Five or six on each side were lying dead killed by bayonet wounds, and an Englishman was in a standing position fixed to the wall by a bayonet through his heart.
9, p. 75 (23 x 17.5 cm.). Letter, dated 8th Oct. 1776, from Gen. R. Smith to Orme. Original. Confirms Pascall's account of Draper's sally.
