p. [i]. Table of Contents.
pp. 1:-346. Letters from Captain Gabriel Harper, whilst acting as the English Resident with Sujah Dowlah, Nabob of Oude, to the Select Committee, the Commander-in-Chief [General Sir Robert Barker], the Chief of Patna [John Cartier], James Alexander, Gen. Richard Smith in England, and others. From the 1st of December 1769 to the 5th of June 1771. “Containing a detail of the Transactions and military operations of the King [Shah Alam], Shujah Dowlah, the Morattoes, Jauts, Seiks, Patans, Rohillas, Nujib-ul-Dowlah, Gazadin Cawn, Cossum Ally, Sumrow, the Abdalli, and the English troops towards Oude, during the period of the Correspondence, which is very sensible." Mostly copies, but some, i.e., the last (to Gen. Richd. Smith, dated 5/6/71) is evidently an Original. Another copy of these letters up to Dec. 1770 will be found in 87. 1 below. Captain Harper's letters enclose various others, e.g.:- p. 34. Letter from Shaw Izzut Ulah to Mirza Abdullah, recd. 6th Feb. 1770. p. 75. Letter from the R. P. Wendel to Capt. Harper, 23rd March 1770. p. 306. Extracts from a letter from Sir Robert Barker, 1st April 1771.
N.B. To this volume is prefixed a printed Map, inscribed “The Countries of Indostan East of Delhi, by Major James Rennell, late Surveyor General to the East India Company in Bengal. (See 65. 23.) Engraved from a drawing made and given by him for the use of this History: To whom the Author testifies his acknowledgments."
A spare copy - apparently a proof of the Map - lies loose in the volume. This Map is interesting as it is the only actual acknowledgment made by Orme in print to any of the gentlemen who assisted him with materials for his History, though on a few of the Maps the names of the persons who supplied them are given, e.g., see 65. 14.
