p. [i]. Table of Contents.
, pp. 1-40 (32.5 x 19.5 cm.). Detail of the War with Hyder Ali in a letter from Madras, dated 23rd Feb. 1769. Copy. The author of this paper is F. Browne, see 197. 15. On p. 31 is told the story of the saving of Col. Wood's army on the 4 Oct. 1768 by Captain Brooke who, at a critical moment, brought up a small body of troops shouting “Colonel Smith! Colonel Sahib!” which diversion caused Haidar Ali to retire. In the same handwriting this paper is endorsed as follows :- “Govr Pigot was an invincible Warrior and Governor, Palk a profound Politician, but this Man is a great Fool. - Hyder Ally." "This man" was Governor Charles Bourchier.
, pp. 41-49 (30.5 x 18.5 cm.). The Adventures of Mr. Stewart in the Carnatic. Copy, imperfect and the pages out of order. Re-copied in XVII. 42. This paper differs considerably from the official account of his career which Stewart gives in a letter dated 17 Oct. 1771 (see Madras Public Consultations, 22 Oct. 1771).
, (21.5 x 18 cm.), (1), pp. 53-58. Extract from a letterfrom Cuttack, dated 15th Jan. 1775. Copy. Copied in XVII. 4. A description of the great Chilka Lake. (2) pp. 59-64. Extract of a letter from Ballasore dated 22nd Jan. 1775. Copy. Copied in XVIII. 5. Describes the road from Ganjam to Ballasore. Printed in Dalrymple's Oriental Repertory, II. 40 .
, pp.65-116 (31.5 x 19 cm.). Different Accounts of Thibet, addressed to Mr. [Warren ] Hastings. The first paper, a letter addressed to the Governor-General, is a copy and unsigned, but from the opening words it is evidently the Report by George Bogle on his return from the expedition to Tibet, which he made under the orders (dated 13th May 1774) of Warren Hastings, then Governor-General, for the purpose of opening up commercial and friendly intercourse between Tibet and India. The remaining papers are apparently enclosures, one of them "An account of the Trade of Thibet, &c., &c.," will be found in the India Office Records, Home Miscellaneous. Vol. 118, where it is headed "Copy of a Journal of Mr. George Bogle, transmitted by him to Government," and appended to letter, dated Chamnamning, 5th Dec. 1774, from George Bogle to the Governor-General.
, pp. 118-165 (38 x 24 cm.). Account of sundry Zemindars dependent on Masulipatam. Copy.
, pp. 179-216 (38 x 23.5 cm.). Petitions from Rausom Venkatachelum Paupa Braminy to the Governor and Council of Fort St. George. Copy. From this paper it appears that his father had been Chief Dubash to the Governor, and that he himself was made Chief Dubaah in 1739, but his occupation came to an end with the capture of Madras in 1746. Opposite p. 202 has been inserted an autograph letter, dated 10th Jan. 1753, from John Carey to Captain Robert Clive. Amongst the correspondence enclosed in support of his petition is an interesting letter from John Hallyburton, dated 2nd March 1748, in which he points out the difficulty of providing for the Company's servants who had been in Madras at the time of its capture. On page 213 there is an interesting list of Indian servants of the Company at the time of the capture of Madras. The paper throws much light upon the effect upon the natives of the capture of Madras by the French. The Petition was read in Council on the 29th January 1753, and simply filed, see Fort St. George Public Consultations of that date.
, pp. 219-222 (31x19 cm.). Note by R. O. on the Vidam. Original. Copied in I. 31. Written by Orme in 1763 (see 45, p. 1).
, pp. 223-224 (31 x 19 cm.). Note by R. O. on the different Sects of Brahmins. Original. Copied in I. 32. Taken in 1763 from A. Roger's La Porte ouverte pour parvenir à la connoissance du Paganisme caché. Traduite en François par T. La Grue, 4to., Amsterdam, 1670. In 45, p. 1, Orme describes this paper as dealing with the six different sects of Brahmans on the Coast of Coromandel.
