Gives certain details regarding the attack on the Mount by Colonel Lally (9 Feb. 1759) In this letter Caillaud says that European cavalry “had no chance with the black cavalry a l'arme blanche,” which accounts for the French cavalry halting and firing their carbines instead of charging with the sword.

13, pp. 99 (22.5 x 18.5 cm.). Extracts from Lieut. Cosby's Journal of the Expedition against Bomrauze, commenced in Aug. 1777. In Orme's handwriting. Sir Henry Cosby's Journals are in the British Museum [now the British Library]. See Add MS 29898.
14, pp. 103-106 (22.5 x 19 cm.). Letter, dated Campbeltown, Argyllshire, 19th Nov. 1777, from Col. Charles Campell to Orme. Original. Offers to give any explanations which Orme may require of his Journals, which he says he sent to Orme two years previously by Col. Donald (see 74.2 below). Says that Col. Call kept a Journal (this is missing, see 75. 3 below), and gives many details of his Campaigns which were omitted in his Journal. Col. Campbell says that he was "the first and only officer that commanded the Army in one march from Cape Comorin to the River Kisna, and obliging every Rajah, Palegar or Fausdar in ·that march of upwards of 600 miles to settle with the Nabob."

Copy. Duplicate of 32. 20 above. The Capitulation took place the 10th Feb. 1761. This paper is apparently in Mr. Hatfield's handwriting. (See No. 32 below.)

Says of Clive: "I have a very strange opinion of Fortune's darling child," but the letters are chiefly concerned with Orme's and his own prospects in the Company. An extract from the second of these letters regarding the Marathas is copied in 42. 1. (2) pp. 22.5-227 (19.5 x 16 cm.). Letter, dated 20 December 1750, from Sir James Foulis to Orme. Original. Expresses very pessimistic views upon the prospects of the English. “The fear of the Lord and the terror of the French have fallen on the Governor and Council of Bombay."
