1, pp. 3-115 (32.5 x 21 cm.). Colonel Charles Campbell's Journal, 10 Feb. 1764 to 12 Feb. 1765. Original. The Journal kept by Major Charles Campbell during the second siege of Madura 1764, which was defended by Muhammad Yusuf, Governor of Madura and Tinnevelly; also the subsequent operations in Madura and Tinnevelly up to Campbell's return to Cuddalore, 12th February 1765.
2, pp. 118-209 (29.5 x 18.5 cm.). Colonel Charles Campbell's Journal from 6 April 1765 to 31 March 1766. Original. Copied in XVII. 44 and XVIII. 6. Describes the chase of Nizam Ali Khan and his “return to Madras and taking of the Palams near Tripassour." There was not then," says Campbell (p. 206), "a single man who durst call himself the Nabob's Enemy in the whole Carnatick." At the end is a note in Orme's handwriting as follows :- "This curious manuscript Colonel Charles Campbell was so obliging to lend me, and Colonel Donald Campbell to bring to me on Sunday the 7th May [1775] at 4 p.m. [See 72. 14 above.] I came home at 10 in the evening and read it through before I went to bed."
