Dated Madras, 3 July 1777 (pp. 49-51); Madras, 15 Oct. 1777, enclosing an account of his expedition against Bomrauze (see below, No.2) and a copy of his letter to the Council regarding his claims to the Adjutancy (pp. 51-62); Madras, 14 March 1778, sending a plan of Bomrauze's country (pp. 73-75); Fort St. George, 2 July 1777 (pp. 77-80); Pondicherry,18 Oct. 1778, enclosing an account of the siege (see below, No.4) (pp. 93-94). (2) From Charles Floyer. Dated Ongole, 11 Oct. 1776. Mentions the death of Orme's old clerk, Sunca Rama (pp. 29-30); Masulipatam, 28 Jan. 1777 (pp. 33-44); on the road to Madras, 28 June 1777 (pp. 45-48). (3) From William Petrie. 2, pp. 97-101 (29 x 19.5 cm.), N arrative of the Expedition against Bom Rauze Pollam in the Months of August and September 1777, commanded by Lieut.-Col. Cosby. Apparently not in Sir Henry Cosby's own handwriting, but see above, No. 1 (1). (See also Add. Mss. 29898).
3, pp. 105-122 (37 x 24 cm.). Extracts of letters relative to the Gomsoor Expedition. Copies sent by Col. Cosby (see No.1 (1) above) to Orme. They consist of extracts from two letters dated 21 Jan. 1778 and Feby. 1778. The expedition started under Capt. Lysaght, who was relieved of the command when the expedition was nearly over “for only flogging a Rascal, whom the Ganjam Ladds called a Renter." This expedition is not mentioned by name in Wilson's History of the Madras Army, though vaguely referred to in Vol. I., p.345.
4, pp. 123-234 (22 x 17.5 cm.). A Journal of the Proceedings of the Army from their Encampment in the Red Hills near Pondicherry, the 8th Aug. 1778. Copy. Duplicate of 279. 1. The Original is in Add. Mss. 29898-29900). This is a Journal of the siege and capture of Pondicherry by Major-General Hector Munro, kept possibly by Sir H. Cosby.
5, pp. 237-243 (33 x 20.5 cm.). The London Gazette Extraordinary, March 18th 1779. Printed, Duplicate of 197. 16. (1) Copy of a letter, dated Pondicherry, 27 Oct. 1778, from Major-General Hector Munro to the Lord Viscount Weymouth, His Majesty's Principal Secretary of State, describing the siege of Pondicherry and enclosing a copy of the Capitulation. ' (2) Despatches, dated “Rippon," off Sadras, 16 Aug. 1778, Madras, 31 Oct. 1778, from Commodore Sir Edward Vernon to Philip Stevens, Esq., Secretary of the Admiralty, describing some indecisive engagements with the French off Pondicherry, and notifying the capture of that town. (3) Extract from a letter, dated Spithead, 15 March 1779, from Commodore Evans to Mr. Philip Stevens, describing the successful action of the Rattlesnake Cutter with two French Privateers.
