Reasons for the gallant defence of fortified places made by Indian Troops, in contrast with their apparent cowardice in the field when opposed to Europeans. From internal evidence this must have been written during the siege of Madura in 1763-1764. "Indeed, if we make a retrospect of the last fifteen years' transactions in India we may remark that no fortresses have been so obstinately defended as those where the Governor has been a Rebel … but the most glaring of all now remains undecided. Izoof Cawn, on the same principle, has made this obstinate defence of Madura. However taken Madura must be coute que coute. But the transactions of lzoof Cawn ought to have this effect upon our Administration - never to place independent power in the hands of a Mussulman, for most assuredly, sooner or later, he will throw off his Allegiance and become a competitor for dominion against your Authority."
