One letter from Jas B Fulton, Architect, to Lethaby, undated, regarding his measurements and drawings of the Hagia Sophia, which he mentions as being with the Architectural Review.
24 letters to Lethaby from Eugene Michel Antoniadi (1870-1944), the astronomer and architectural researcher, dated 1903 to 1906. The letters contain detailed discussion of the architectural, historical and artistic features of the Hagia Sophia, and include sketches and photographs.
(1903) Establishes contact with Lethaby. Discussing: his series of papers on Hagia Sophia in the publication Knowledge; the death of Harold Swainson; Lethaby's Sancta Sophia Constantinople and his interpretation of Greek texts; the original mosaic decoration and outer cross of the dome; Salzenberg's work on Hagia Sophia; and terms for 'workman' in various languages.
(1904) Discussing: Antoniadi's work on astronomy in relation to architecture, and his proposed book on the Hagia Sophia; Paspates' Byzantine Meletae; Fossati's drawings at Milan; the fall of the dome in the 10th century; the Parakypticon; and the north gallery. Enclosed with the letters are a sketch of the head of Veronica in the north gallery, and a photo of the marble in the north gallery.
(1905) Discussing: further research into the Hagia Sophia; finding an English publisher for Antontiadi's Greek-text; Fulton's plans of Sancta Sophia; Antoniadi's own plans, sections and elevations of the church, to be published as architectural plates; and the role of photography in architectural history and research. Enclosed with the letters is a photograph of a person in robes, head covered, stood in front of a Byzantine ruin [unidentified].
(1906). Letter thanking Lethaby for sending a copy of Henderson's study of St Sergius, and updating Lethaby on the progress of his book.
The file closes with a letter to Lethaby from architect John Belcher (1841-1913), dated 14 October 1907. Belcher updates Lethaby on Antoniadi's condition and address, advising that Antoniadi had been through a period of poor physical and mental health.
