Box containing 5 notebooks and 2 annotated libretti.

(1). ff. 1-37. Two beige manuscript notebooks of sketch material, largely melodic and relating to the beginning of Act 1, as well as to three other works:

• ff.** relates to the abandoned chamber arrangement of Deowa (commenced late 1987)
• ff.** gives a complete melodic outline of the voice part of the 4 Poems by Jaan Kaplinski (published 1991).

Both notebooks also contain brief sketches for the 4 Songs of Autumn (ff*, *).

(2). ff. 38-88. Two blue tartan manuscript notebooks, each containing detailed sketches and workings, identifiably from Act 1.

(3). ff. 89-138. One gridded notebook (blue cover, ‘Universal’) of assorted early-stage sketches and notes, including extensive numerical workings, diagrams, and rhythmic plans.

(4). ff. 139-238. Heavily annotated typescript of a version of the complete libretto, titled ‘Revised text: 15/3/89’. Considerably different to the libretto published in 1991. Annotations in the composer’s hand include musical ideas, and handwritten emendations. Some inserted leaves in a different typeface.

(5). ff. 239-267. Annotated typescript of a later version of the libretto to Act 2, bearing a closer resemblance to the original version of the published work. Annotations in the composer’s hand include musical ideas, emendations, and various jottings.
