Contains:
- ff. 1-55. Extensive sketches for the ‘Turning of the Seasons’ masque, much of which is highly developed and clearly relates to the first version of the finished score. Considerable material in particular for the various Marian motets, interspersed with leaves showing earlier stages of the material’s development and working.
- ff. 56-181. Assorted sketches and notes relating to the second part of Act 1, before the 'Turning of the Seasons' masque. Several leaves show developed sketches which clearly relate to passages in the first version of the finished score. Others show various melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and instrumentation workings.
