Sketches for musical settings of poems by Robin Blaser (‘The Shadow’ and ‘Carmelo Point’), neither of which are referenced in existing Birtwistle literature. This material provides a new insight into Birtwistle’s relationship with Blaser, the librettist of 'The Last Supper', whose poems are also set in 'The Moth Requiem' (2012) and 'Three Songs from the Holy Forest' (2017).
Folded A2 pages, in pencil. Originally found amongst material for 'Gawain'.
- ff. 1-4. ‘The Shadow’: folios 1-2 contain a continuous draft setting of the opening two lines of Robin Blaser’s Nerval translation ‘The Shadow’ (1965); folios 3-4 comprise further pitch and instrumentation jottings.
- ff. 5-9. ‘Carmelo Point’: folios 5-6 contain a rhythmic plotting, on 2 staves, of the complete text of Blaser’s ‘Carmelo Point’ (1984); folios 7-8 give a more developed sketch of the first stanza, with instrumentation annotations; folio 9 shows brief melodic and numerical workings.
