Marriage Contract (P.Lond. V 1710, TM 19727), Encomiastic Poems by Dioscorus (P.Aphrod.Lit. p. 430 no. IV 30, P.Lond.Lit. 101, TM 59717, LDAB 821, MP3 351.030) and Contract of Lease of Land (?) (P.Lond. V 1879 descr., TM 36984)
- Scope & Content:
-
Papyrus 1737a:
Recto (P.Lond. V 1710, TM 19727): The recto preserves the beginning of the first 17 lines of a marriage contract, dated to the reign of Justin II. Probably the opening formula on lines 4-6 contained a general reflection on the nature of marriage and these lines were possibly spaced throughout in order to be marked off from the rest of the contract. The name of the bride was Theodora, like the one in a papyrus published as P.Flor. III 294. Dated between 566-573.
Verso (P.Aphrod. Lit. p. 430 no. IV 30, P.Lond. Lit. 101, P.Lond. V 1820 descr., TM 59717, LDAB 821, MP3 351.030): hexameter verses in the hand of Dioscorus, of which traces of 1 line in correspondence of the gap and remains of the beginning of 4 other lines survive; one verse was added lower down; verses 4 and 5 are separated by a space of approximately 30 mm, indicating the separation between the two literary works. The first one was an encomiastic poem, possibly addressed to a duke or a member of his staff. Possibly dated between 565-573.
To the same document probably belongs SB XXII 15633, another contract of marriage with iambic trimeters written on the verso by Dioscorus of Aphrodito’s hand.
Papyrus 1737b (P.Lond. V 1879 descr.; TM 36984): The fragment preserves the remains of 16 lines of a sixth-century document of uncertain content, presumably a contract of lease of land. The text mentions the possession of a piece of land and, in the following lines, its boundaries are specified. The land was probably held in common by three women.

Two unrelated fragments of papyrus, dark brown in places; both coming from the archive of Dioscorus; housed in one glass frame.
Left-hand side fragment: Papyrus 1737a: The recto is the upper left-hand corner of a papyrus sheet; written across the fibres. Well-preserved on the left and upper sides; probably folded from the bottom upwards and possibly from the right side towards the middle. The verso is written along the fibres and upside-down in relation to the recto; only a few lines are preserved followed by blank space.
Right-hand side fragment: Papyrus 1737b: Fragment from the right side of a document, written along the fibres. Probably folded at right angles to the fibres, but it is not clear in which direction. The back is blank.
