Assorted material (262 folios) pertaining to the early stage planning of the composer's autobiography. Categorised as follows:
1. 70 folios of typescript material: treatment, chapter outline, and draft first chapter:
- [ff** total 12]: Typed treatment and outline of 12 chapters, titled ‘The Goldfish Bowl’. 2 copies of the treatment (each 2 leaves) one of which lightly annotated in pencil; chapter outline more heavily annotated in ink.
- [ff** total 58] 2 copies of a typed first draft of Chapter 1, titled ‘…Salad days’. Both copies loose leaves, paginated 1-29, and lightly annotated.
2. 147 folios of formative material, mostly handwritten:
- [ff** total 4]: Draft title page, chapter outline, acknowledgements, and list of illustrations. Provisionally titled “The Goldfish Bowl’ or ‘Why have you got such big ears, Gran’ma?’, Opus X’. The 15 chapters listed correspond with first typed draft of manuscript. Loose leaves from spiral-bound notebook; handwritten in black and blue ink, some pencil.

- [ff* total 30]: Assorted detailed notes. Begins with list of family members, also includes a detailed early outline of 52 chapters (19 folios) – this is likely an earlier draft of the item listed above. Additional folios in the middle of the pad contain unrelated personal and professional notes. Coverless notepad, top-bound with glue; handwritten, mainly in pencil, occasional ink.

- [ff** total 4]: ‘Suggested illustrations’, organised by chapter (seemingly according to 52-chapter plan). Plain paper, loose leaves; handwritten in pencil.
- [ff** total 18]: Rough ‘Notes of people’ and loose timeline of events listed under years. Handwritten in pencil.
- [ff** total 18]: ‘Notes for Book / things to remember’. 13 folios contain assorted draft passages; the remainder contain rough timelines, names, and other notes. Loose leaves from spiral-bound notebook; handwritten mainly in ink, some pencil.
- [ff* total 5]: Assorted early-stage notes on chapter names, rough timelines, and photos to be included. Loose leaves from Leicester ‘Grand Hotel’ pad; handwritten in pencil.
- [ff** total 11]: ‘The Teachings of Theosophy’, short ‘book’ in 7 sections by Elisabeth Lutyens. Complete typescript copy paginated 1-10; additional single leaf handwritten with title and brief introduction.
