File of papers addressed to and compiled by R.A. Skelton, Honorary Secretary of the Hakluyt Society, relating to the project to publish a modern edition of the Journals of Captain Cook's Voyages. File relates primarily to the first volume The Journals of Captain Cook on his Voyages of Discovery: The Voyage of the Endeavour 1768-1771 edited by J.C. Beaglehole (Cambridge: 1955). Includes preliminary material relating to the project, including outline of number of volumes, editorial arrangements, financial and printing arrangements, copying of material etc.
Correspondents include: Sir Maurice Holmes; J.A. Williamson; Marcel Aurousseau, Royal Geographical Society; L.F. Fitzhardinge; Admiral Wyatt; J.C. Beaglehole, W Shears, Batchworth Press; C.A. Burmester, Commonwealth National Library; Edward Lynam, British Museum; Dr J.W. Davidson, St John's College Cambridge; Phyllis Mander Jones, Mitchell Library; Bernard Smith; Norman .B. Kinnear, British Museum (Natural History); & Frank Maggs. Also includes correspondence relating to grant of £3000 from the Government of New Zealand, and reference to applications for grants from the Governments of Canada and Australia. Also includes annotated copies of minutes of Hakluyt Society Council Minutes relating to the project, minutes of Cook sub-committee, and progress reports. Also includes handwritten notes by R.A. Skelton.
