File of papers addressed to and compiled by R.A. Skelton, Honorary Secretary of the Hakluyt Society, relating to the project to publish a modern edition of the Journals of Captain Cook's Voyages. File relates primarily to the first volume The Journals of Captain Cook on his Voyages of Discovery: The Voyage of the Endeavour 1768-1771 edited by J.C. Beaglehole (Cambridge: 1955).
Correspondents include: Norman B. Kinnear, British Museum (Natural History); J.A. Williamson; Batchworth Press; Bernard Smith; Dr H. Charles Cameron; J.C. Beaglehole; Miss Ida Oldroyd; C.A. Burmester, Commonwealth National Library; Joahn Easton, Robert Maclehose & Co; Dr Ashworth Underwood, Wellcome Historical Medical Museum; Averil Lysaght, including notes on correspondence of Sir Joseph Banks; & Sir Maurice Holmes. Also includes bundle of 'letters to periodicals & answers', which were a result of letters to in the press publicising the project to publish Cook's Journals, and asking for information about relevant materials in private ownership. Letters appeared in The Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Observer, The Spectator,The Manchester Guardian,The Yorkshire Post, The Birmingham Post, & The Scotsman.
Also includes notes compiled by R.A. Skelton.
