Top fragment (Papyrus 1638a, P.Lond. V 1881, TM 36985): End of a sixth-century contract, possibly a sale in advance of wine and other goods, payable at the vintage in the month of Mesore; the quality of the wine is guaranteed until Mecheir. In case of failure to supply the goods, 2 solidi are perhaps to be paid.
Bottom fragment (Papyrus 1638b, P.Lond. V 1744, TM 38848): Receipt for poll tax issued to Menas the soldier, son of Sarapammon, for the amount of one arithmion (solidus). Dated to the seventh or eighth century.

Two fragments of different size not belonging together, mounted on cardboard in one glass case.
Top fragment (Papyrus 1638a): Rectangular fragment of a papyrus sheet, probably folded from right to left; imperfect at top, bottom, and left side; written along the fibres on one side only.
Bottom fragment (Papyrus 1638b): Rectangular sheet of papyrus folded from the bottom upwards and written on one side along the fibres; successive marks made by the seal are visible on the upper part. Blank space separates the subscription from the receipt.
