A diary entry and a few letters of sympathy received at the Savoy Theatre following the death of Rupert D'Oyly Carte:
(1). Page torn from diary (author not indicated), including entry for Sep 12 1948: 'R.D.C. died = poor small man'.
(2). Autograph letter (13 Sep 1948) from Harry P. Towers (Theatrical Manager) to Stanley Parker (Secretary, D'Oyly Carte Opera Company), together with a copy reply (17 Sep): 'You will be pleased to hear that Miss Bridget D'Oyly Carte has been left all the Rights and Interest of the Company and has taken over the management already and will do all she can to maintain the old history and traditions.'
(3). Autograph letter from Frank B. O'Neill of Dorking ('a lifelong friend of "Dickie" Collet's'). Refers to Canadian tours. 'I never met RDC's daughter, tho' I had met Lady Dorothy. Having been born at Cranbrook & as a kid been to the lovely Hemsted garden parties (1st Lord Cranbrook's) I naturally took an interest in the family.' With a copy reply from [Parker]: 'You are one of the few remaining people that I know Mr. Collet would wish to be present.'
(4). Autograph letter (14 Sep 1948) from Mr H. R. Jones of Bristol ('Late Theatre staff'): 'He was a most generous and kindly man that ever lived, people were proud to serve such a man.'
(5). Autograph letter (16 Sep 1948) from Agnes Webb (Lady Webb) of Berkhamsted.: 'My father the late Michael Gunn was a partner and great friend of Mr Carte's father, so the friendship in the family has lasted many years.'
