- Title:
- D'Oyly Carte Family Papers: Michael D'Oyly Carte (Photographs)
- Scope & Content:
-
(1). Seven small black and white photographs (one with a negative) of Michael D'Oyly Carte (and others). In the earliest portrait (studio), he is approximately two years old; the latest portrait is annotated on the verso: '1932 or 1933' (Michael D'Oyly Carte died in 1932).
(2). Michael D'Oyly Carte's grave:
- Autograph postcard (14 Nov 1933) from Eric Gill, Pigotts, High Wycombe, to [Rupert] D'Oyly Carte. Gill was commissioned to carve the inscription on a wooden graveboard: 'Thank you very much for the photographs. I think the memorial looks very good. I am sorry it had to be put crossways.' Gill hopes that the grave mound will be kept 'according to nature' and 'not the present squared up & patted down shape'.
- Sixteen black and white photographs (different sizes) and four negatives of the grave. Four of these photographs are date-stamped '1972' on their versos.
- Note: the inscription recorded in David Pearce, Eric Gill: The Inscriptions (London, 1994), inscription no. 591 (p. 140). Pearce's catalogue builds upon Evan R. Gill, The Inscriptional Work of Eric Gill: An Inventory (1964) - see correspondence in this file noted below.
(3). Three typed letters:
- 13 Sep 1956. Evan R. Gill (brother of Eric Gill) to Bridget D'Oyly Carte. Gill would like to keep the photograph of the memorial he has been sent. 'I shall be in London for a day or two from Oct. 17th on business connected with the publication of a catalogue of my brother's work and would much like to give myself the pleasure of calling upon you.'
- 14 Sep 1956. Carbon copy letter, from Albert Truelove to E. R. Gill.
- 16 Sep 1956. Evan R. Gill to Truelove.
(4). Photocopy of English newspaper report of the death of Michael D'Oyly Carte in a road accident, near Lucerne. And a photocopy page from the National Trust brochure for Coleton Fishacre which includes a photograph of Michael D'Oyly Carte (and a photograph of other family members in D'Oyly Carte fancy dress costume).
